Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Yeah, Dan Beebe has less competence that Allard Baird, Dayton Moore and Carl Peterson combined.

Seriously though, who's calling Mizzou the bad guy? The articles I've read are about other schools pleading with MU and NU to stay... I don't think I've seen anything that says Mizzou is screwing over the Big 12 teams, that they should stay (outside of the benefit of those who want them to stay), etc.

Hell, based on what I've read, I don't think Mizzou plays a huge part in things... it's much more about Texas, and then Nebraska. If Texas leaves, it's taking half the conference with it. If Nebraska leaves, I've heard there's a better chance Texas leaves. If Mizzou and only Mizzou leaves, the Big 12 stays.

It's he and Texas to blame ultimately for the conference's demise... true. It's not like KU/KSU/etc can help what's going on. And the movers just happen to be in the right place at the right time to move up.

He's paid to be Texas' sock puppet.

There's a reason that after the Big XII meetings, the only people to speak were him and the Texas prez.

And, "We didn't start this, but we'll end it." Dude... **** you.

Someone on FB just said Colorado might be "the first domino" and go to the Pac 10 as early as tomorrow...

That would be hilarious. All this talk about Texas, Nebraska, Mizzou, what happens to Kansas, and the red headed stepchild stands up and says "I'm leaving forever!!"... the 11 others shrug, one even says WTF was that? and everyone goes back to what they were doing.

About equal revenue sharing? (paraphrased) "Nope. That issue's not on the table. They all knew what they signed up for."

Ya know, before this all started all the other schools who weren't Texas and OU were pissed about it too. But, now that the shit seems to be hitting the fan... I guess it's better than nothing?

It's highly entertaining, but I'm not sure if it's in a good way...

Osborne hopes to put issue to bed "before too long"

Posted by: Brian Christopherson on June 8, 2010 at 7:18PM CST
Nebraska athletic Tom Osborne is speaking tonight on his monthly show on the Husker Sports Network.

He was asked a few questions by Lane Grindle about conference realignment to lead off the show.

"Well, I suppose there's quite a bit I could speculate on," Osborne said. "But as you and I talked about before the show came on, there's a lot of information that we really don't have right now. And hopefully we'll get things put together in the next few days. So anything I would say regarding Nebraska's position or other schools in the Big 12 would be pure speculation at this point. And I don't think that's very helpful. So as much as I know fans don't like it, I think we need to put certain things off limits ... but I think before too long, and I don't know exactly what that time frame is, we'll be able to put this thing to bed because I'm getting tired of it, you're probably getting tired of it, the fans are getting tired of it."

Is there a misconception of Nebraska's relationship with Texas?

"I think maybe so," Osborne said. "We certainly don't have anything against anybody in the Big 12. This decision is not going to be based on animosity, on petty jealousy. I mean you're talking about something that could maintain for the next 75 or 100 years. I mean this is a big deal in terms of the University of Nebraska. This is a big deal in view of many other institutions. So you don't ever make a decision based on personal likes, dislikes. And frankly, I get along very well with (Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds). I'm a great admirer of Mack Brown. And Texas has obviously done very well athletically and you have to admire them for that. So this is not a case where we're somehow reacting to any one school, particularly to Texas."

What are Osborne's thoughts on the way this has been covered by the modern "media?"

"Well, I think the earliest event was the announcement or the speculation out of Kansas City, which was pure speculation, but it was taken as being factual by lots of people," said Osborne, seemingly in reference to a May story by a Kansas City radio station that Nebraska, Missouri, Notre Dame and Rutgers had received offers from the Big Ten. "And it began to take on a life of its own. So what has happened more recently in the media, if something is reported, then many times people will cite that as a reference and say, 'Well, it was reported.' And pretty soon maybe you have something built on a house of cards. There may not be a lot of fact underneath it all and it begins to take on a life of its own. But having said that, I think the media's been good and in most cases, they've tried to check their facts. And even though sometimes they guess, sometimes they guess pretty correctly. Anyway, we just aren't going to add to the confusion until we know for sure."

How much do academics play into any potential decision?

"Certainly academics is a major consideration because when you begin to build a conference ... there is a lot more to it then who plays whom on what particular day, so yeah, that will be part of it," Osborne said. "But again, I don't want to go beyond that."

Damn... I guess not all OU fans are happy with Texas.

(Nothing important... just a funny post)

Quote:
We all knew this day would come - or, those of us with enough brains in our head to see that light.

Every athletic director in this wretched conference has been on its knees servicing Texas since the inception of the idiotic Big 12 which never should have been 12 in the first place. Yes. This includes our own Joe Castiglione.

The only one of them to stand his schools' ground was Tom Osborne. And, thank God someone has the nuts to stand up to the butthummers down in Austin because it surely wasn't going to be us with Castiglione and the limpwristed David Boren in charge!

So sick of all of this crap. Texas and their damn governor at the time forced to take those imbeciles in Waco and Lubbock. Now this garbage!

Screw the Pac-10! You've already seen have crappy their officiating crews. Their fans are as ignorant and insufferable as any you'll come across in Lubbock or Austin.

Take USC out of the picture and the Pac-10 is a big bag of nothing. Our stupid presidents and athletic directors and that insipid buttplunger Beebe have been loafing around getting screwed on every television deal signed.

Damn dogbutt sniffing fools! Why doesn't anyone other than Tom Osborne have any balls? Tired of pictures of that jackweed Beebe looking confused and mad.

Hey, dude, when you give it up without even being asked on a date, don't be surprised when you get no respect. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

The f'ing Pac-10 and Big Ten. So ridiculous. The two most competitive college football conferences are the Big 12 and the SEC. And, so we're standing around pulling our puds while Texas decides what to do...and, all the while those scumbags are trying to foist the blame onto Nebraska.

Screw that, you dickwheels! You know damn well that Texas is going to do whatever it wants no matter what Nebraska does. And, sadly, our idiots will trail along behind on a leash.
