Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Exactly. I hate to see MU leave more than NU because I grew up on the rivalry and love it still to this day.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Big XII scabbed something together and tried to continue on, but I can't imagine them ever putting UT and OU in different divisions.

Well, on one hand you have the threat of ending the Red River Rivalry annually but on the other hand you get the potential of UT and OU playing twice in a season which would be huge.

Will KU, K-State Go Separate Conference Ways?

KANSAS CITY, Kan. --

Kansas University and K-State University may not share the same fate if the Big 12 conference were to disband, according to the vice chairman of the Kansas Board of Regents.

"It is not automatic," said Gary Sherrer in an interview Monday with KMBC's Micheal Mahoney. "I think everybody would be disappointed if those two schools weren't in a regular league together."

The Board of Regents is the governing body for Kansas universities. The board discussed the Big 12's future in a conference call this afternoon. Both Sherrer and board Chairwoman Jill Docking said they are "unwavering in our belief that the best course of K-State and KU is continued affiliation in the Big 12."

As the Big 10 and Pac10 consider raiding the Big 12, neither Kansas school has figured in any of the scenarios based on media reports.

Sherrer said the regents could support KU and K-State taking different paths if that was in the best interest of each school.

Media reports Monday said the PAC 10 is ready to offer Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State slots. And other media reports have indicated the universities of Missouri and Nebraska are in talks to join the Big 10 conference.

KMBC's Nick Griffith reports that Mizzou and Nebraska have until Friday to decide their future.

If the raids were to succeed, that would leave KU, K-State, Iowa State and Baylor University as the only Big 12 schools, likely forcing it to dissolve.

Sherrer blasted the state of things in college sports."What do you think it says, when traditional rivalries that built up over all those years, with all the alums, are just kind of tossed out the window? For one reason: the buck."

KU to the Big East? Why not.

Thats no more ridiculous than the Texas schools playing in the Pac 10.

1 hour time diff vs 2 hour???

True, It would be different...

I have met alot of great MU and KSU fans on here... And some that make you wonder how they can even turn on a computer...

It will sure deflate all the trash talk and make pretty much everything meaningless between the states and schools...

Sure they will play, but it will just be another non-con game that really means nothing in the course of the season...

Currently, the Illinois-Mizzou games are pretty cool, in both sports.

Obviously the football game has a larger impact on the overall season, so this might not matter much to KU fan.

Basketball is more important because it's a larger revenue generator.
