Okay gang, as many of you know I still have friends at the highest level in the Chiefs organization and have this info to share with full confidence: Scott Pioli is the new GM. His announcement will come Thursday or Friday at the latest. Clark and Scott are working out the finer points of his contract tonight (money & control), but the deal is sealed. Also, Clark informed Herm Edwards and his coaching staff that they will be released. All assistants can reapply through Scott.

I only share this information because I'm no longer with the team and it's fun to share that a new day is dawning at Arrowhead. Scott Pioli will quickly move to clean out the front office and hire a new coach.

The only info I have on the new coach is it will not be Kirk Ferentz from the Iowa Hawkeyes. Kirk coaches his son at Iowa and does not want to leave until his son graduates.

Mike Shanahan has contacted Pioli, but I don't know any info beyond that.

Come on, you had to know this was coming.

I thought that was found in the J Edgar Hoover papers that were recently released to the public?

Time to fuel the old rumor mill, if only to receive dozens of "you are such a liar!" emails and responses. It's been slow around here.

I heard from a friend of somebody who knows somebody who once dated the cousin of an important guy who once worked on the Chiefs (maybe as part of the grounds crew) that Scott Pioli, late of the New England Patriots, will be named the new general manager of the Chiefs today or tomorrow.

Furthermore, it is rumored that Pioli will fire head coach Herm Edwards and his entire staff effective immediately, and a search for a new coach will begin. The name "Mike Shanahan" has been tossed around quite a bit as a possible candidate.

Remember, there is less than 0.000001% this is true, but since I heard the rumor, I'm passing it along to you guys. If it IS true, remember - you heard it here first. If it's not, then remember - I'm just a dumbass with a blog.

It appears the Chiefs are the only remaining suitor for the NFL’s most sought-after general manager candidate. But no hire has been made official, and speculation continues to churn. So where do the Chiefs stand in hiring a GM?

Public knowledge of the Chiefs’ activity in their search is confined to a singular event: this week’s interview with New England vice president Scott Pioli.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt and interim president Denny Thum may have conducted other interviews that escaped detection. Either way, there has been a drought of news, so naturally rumors filled the vacuum. Plenty of them. Here are just a handful:

•Pioli came to Kansas City for his interview (he didn’t).

•First a Tuesday and later a Wednesday news conference was scheduled to announce his hiring (none was scheduled).

•The Chiefs have told coach Herm Edwards and his staff to quit working in preparation for Pioli’s arrival (they weren’t; Edwards and his assistants were in their offices working Thursday).

•The Chiefs have agreed with Pioli on a contract to be their next general manager.

It’s possible that last one is true, but if so, the Chiefs are free to make the announcement. It would make sense they are eager to show their new general manager to the world given the lack of positive news to come out of Arrowhead Stadium in the last couple of years.

More instructive are the last public words from Hunt, who said last month that he would be thorough and perhaps interview several candidates.

Plans can change. But it would be most unlike the 43-year-old Hunt to act in haste and during an interview fall in love with a candidate, even one with an impressive resume like Pioli, and decide to end the process then and there.

If the Chiefs are interested in hiring Pioli, they lost their only competitor Thursday when the Cleveland Browns introduced Eric Mangini as their new head coach. Pioli also interviewed with Cleveland and, though the Browns’ general manager’s job remains vacant, it’s unlikely Pioli would be interested because he’d no longer be able to hire his own coach.

Pioli would be welcome to return to the Patriots, where he’s been coach Bill Belichick’s main talent evaluator since 2000.

As for Edwards and his staff, the interminable wait for a new general manager can’t possibly be helping their chances to return. But they spent this week reviewing video, evaluating players and writing reports that will await the new general manager and, perhaps, the next coaching staff.
