An unintended benefit of the Simmons pick is that Taylor will NEED to avoid all penalties.

You eliminate half of the penalties and Taylor is a plus starter.

So you believe that 60 yards (half of the penalty yardage against him last season) in penalties over a 17 game season AND the playoffs is the difference between Jawaan Taylor being someone that should be benched and him being a plus starter?

Guys...y'all get too hung up on these penalties. Guy was responsible for about 6 penalty yards per game last year. he had 115 penalty yards against in 19 games.

Do that again next year and otherwise be a plus pass protector and I will give exactly ZERO shits about the penalties.

Cut those down to nothing but become a less effective pass protector and THEN I'll talk about benching you.

We just put WAY too much weight on the penalties. Y'all act like he was penalized 2-3 times/gm every single game. He had 8 games last year where he wasn't penalized (same number of regular season games as where he was). The narrative with the guy has just gone WAY overboard.

The Geoff Schwartz (or Mitchell? Don't remember) bit about his leaning back creating a larger gap for Trey Smith to clog up and thus causing him to make more mistakes in protection is something I'm more concerned about with Taylor than the penalties.

I have no clue if Schwartz is actually right about that. It just seems like the right side of the line had way more problems this year than it did the previous season.

Also, yeah, I've been saying ever since Collinsworth flapped his vagina in the Detroit game that I don't give a shit about penalties. Especially little 5-yard ****ers.

I'll say what I said when Schwartz first said it -- I saw PLENTY of times when Smith was getting his ass kicked with Taylor taking a horizontal set.

I saw plenty of times that Smith was part of a combo block and got waxed.

Blaming Taylor for Smith's struggles last year reeked of a whipping boy taking the bullet for a sacred cow. People like to pick on Taylor BECAUSE of the penalties and so it was a natural fit.

But when we started going over the clips the week Schwartz said that (and the usual suspects glommed onto it), there were so many examples of Smith getting beat because his ass just got beat.

Vertical sets by ANY offensive tackle can create pressure on an OG. We even started going through Taylor's sets looking for how far back he was going and there just wasn't anything worth noting in there. There may have been an example here and there were you could make the argument, but on balance it just didn't check out.

Yeah Trey smith signing confuses me because he’s a run blocking mauler. But I’m guessing they can’t really switch 3 line positions in the offseason. and he’s proly an average pass blocker which is way better than the left side was

And no thuney wasn’t a good left tackle - he was slightly below average according to the pffs

That a dude coming off a nasty knee injury -- a rookie no less -- is going to come in and push a guy to the bench who's responsible for 5% of our cap. Or funnier still, the 2 year starter here who's been outstanding in the playoffs on our way to a championship and another AFC championship and who's responsible for damn near 10% of our cap.

I'm just saying - it's not nothing. It's a fine figure for ANY viable starter. I mean name a position on the team and in a vacuum, there's an argument for being willing to pay that amount for a starting caliber player. Probably not RB, but damn near everywhere else -- it's at worst, a TOLERABLE number for a starting caliber player.

I'm just saying that I wouldn't hand-waive the consequences of just benching the guy.

Maybe I should say it's a tolerable number and if he gets beat out by Simmons that's also a fine number to swallow because if Simmons beats him out we're in friggin CANDYLAND now. Eating that cost is my best case scenario! We should HOPE for that outcome.

So let me get this straight...

There are people who would be UPSET if the 'top 5 pick before the injury' Left Tackle that we just took in the first round actually takes the starting Left Tackle job in training camp because we signed a former 5th round pick that's been backing up Trent Williams for $15m in free agency when that was the best we could do to make sure we could put an actual NFL player at LT to protect Mahomes?

Like....somehow that's not the absolute BEST thing we could possibly hope for?

I mean...what the actual ****?

So what if we overpay for a swing tackle/insurance policy for one season. I give zero ****s, and actually feel GOOD about the fact that we went from zero LT's on our roster to having TWO.

There’s also the business aspect side of things. Agents will always take advantage of Chiefs/Veach when it comes to protecting Mahomes. They know how valuable he is to the team and the NFL, so the price goes up. It’s business.

Agents will always try to get more.

If we pay top dollar to two elite tackles, I wonder what our cap situation would be like. I wonder what players we wouldn’t be able to retain.

You can’t just write checks in the NFL. Moore actually saved us a ton of money and has a lot of upside. Gotta navigate with what’s out there. We’ll be fine.

We're not paying for elite WR play-even though we will (barring injury) get it this season. We're not paying for elite CB play, even though we will get it this season. We're not paying ANY safeties.

We're not in cap trouble.

There are a lot of people around here who would truly trade the Chiefs winning for being right about transactions they make and disagree with. That’s kind of how spoiled we’ve become as fans. It’s a little crazy, but it comes with the territory.

Some of our fans I honesty believe have beaten wive syndrome. They miss the controversy of the Chiefs always doing dumb shit for them to complain about. Hell, I’m guilty of it from time to time myself. This pick has certainly brought that out in a big way.

We're paying ONE top dollar, and one bottom tier starter money. One more on rookie deal money.

BOTH that we're paying can come off the books in '26 IF we so choose.

We're fine.
