This is valid. I think we should be working on phase shifting technology like in stargate so we just beam nukes on board past their Shields. Or a super soldier...beam him through the Shields, kill the crew, claim the ship!

Gonna be a bit embarrassing for the US navy when they are defeated in combat by a few Somali pirates armed with their village's sole mirror.

What's the range and can you fire that thing from a satellite or a space shuttle? It would be cool when some jackass is saying death to America we just smoke his ass with a laser beam from space.

Rockets would be more susceptible to countermeasures. I mean unless they're unguided, in which case you just use bullets (a rocket won't have the accuracy necessary over any meaningful distance).

It's why our short range missile defense shields are machine guns. Can't throw chaff to fool a bullet.

I'd imagine you could also vary the beam to make it more effective over distance. Shorter range you 'broaden' it, not unlike putting a modified cylinder on a shotgun for the purposes of shooting. Less intense in a single spot, but a wider net that doesn't have to be as precise.

At longer distances it would be akin to that same shotgun firing a slug. You have to be far more precise but you can drop something at a longer distance if you are.

We are witnessing history!! The first laser on a ship.

Two millennia from now, it will be in history that the USS Cruiser John Paul Jones fired a laser for the first time from a ship. Mean while, in that time line, there is a bagillion ships with elevenitybillion lasers.

This is truly an Adam/Eve event. Kinda like the first person(s) to witness the gun. Heck even the wheel

Although technically not a weapon system, the Genesis Device in the Wrath of Khan would seem to have the some of the most destructive (and regenerative) power demonstrated by the federation.

WRONG

The Krenim Temporal Weapon Ship from Voyager beats transphasic torpedoes AND the Genesis device.

The torpedoes will **** up a singular target. A Genesis device will kill/create life on a single planet.

The Krenim Temporal Weapon Ship will ****ing erase your GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT Grandfather, and his entire race, and his planet from the record of time itself as if it never existed.
