The guy could easily have tried to pump his superstar QB by throwing on the goal line at the end of the game.

He did the smart thing and pounded it three times for the ****ing win.

Oh, and he has mind control over the AFC West. 18-1 in his last 19.

Looking back on his career, one thing that I find amazing is how he got his first HC gig with Philly. Rarely does someone go from a position coach to HC without coordinator time first. Not only did he not have that, but he has succeeded well beyond expectations and is now one of the most successful HCs of all time.

You could talk me into opening up that 4th slot for debate as well.

Shula sure seemed to have a lot of 'meh' over the last 20+ years of his career.

I mean Kyle Shanahan is 44 years old right now. We absolutely still think of him as a young coach, right?

Don Shula won his last championship at 43.

From that point on he made the playoffs 12 more times, missed them 10 times.

Of the 12 times he made the playoffs, he went one and done in half of THOSE.

Over the last 2/3 of his career, he went 9-12 in the post-season and really only had 2 'successful' postseasons where he went to (and lost) the Super Bowl. In the other 20 seasons, he either missed the playoffs or went home early.

I've just never been convinced that he's a true 'all-timer'. Good - yeah. Great - probably.

But one of the 4 best coaches in NFL history? Man, I'm just not sure of that.

I think I might just go Belichick, Reid, Walsh and Lombardi. Shula only bests any of those guys on longevity and if you can have Walsh up there through 10 years of dominance and overall impact on the league, I think that exact same argument applies to Lombardi.

I'm pretty sure that's my 4.

Interesting thought exercise -- flip Reid's career on its head to compare it directly to Shulas. I.e. you put Reid's success recently at the beginning of his career and his early years towards the end, similar to Shula.

Reid's resume is still better.

Over the 'last' 20 years of Reids career at that point, he goes to the playoffs 14 times and misses 6 (vs. 12-10 for Shula).

His playoff record is 12-14, slightly better than Shula's. Shula gets an edge in Conference Championships 2-1 but Reid had more deep runs. I think you could say, at worst, that the 'lean years' for the two guys are extremely comparable.

So then you look at the peak to find distinction and Andy's is just better. Andy already has 3 championships to Shula's 2. His 16-2 playoff record of this span is ridiculous -- Shula went 10-5 at his peak.

I mean, Reid just CLEARLY has a better case, even when you try to manipulate the data a bit.

I was perusing wiki last night and goddamn man. The early Eagles staff that Andy constructed might be the best in NFL history as well as guys he added later on.
