Let's Talk About the Eagles (Super Bowl 59 Discussion)

We're headed back to the Ship and will try to be the first team to 3-peat in Super Bowl history!!! Chiefs open up as 1.5 favorites over the Eagles.

Discuss.

This offense hasn't had much time to gel. It's been a weird year. They looked great in the Pittsburgh and Buffalo games. Nothing came easy in the Texans game. Before that, they had adventures throughout the year with different tackles and WRs.

In 2022, the offense hit the ground running from week one, despite having those tackles, rookie RB, no Tyreek Hill, and mediocre WRs.

I think the difference was honestly just Mahomes playing better. He was dialed in from week 1. Probably extra motivation after the disastrous second half against the Bengals in the Championship game.

There's no question the offense is better on paper now. But I wasn't talking about on paper. Just pointing out the 2022 offense put up big numbers all year. They were 1st in total offense. 2nd in red zone efficiency. The only area they struggled in was fumbles. They didn't protect the ball well. But they had no trouble getting yards. They were able to surrender 30+ points and still win the Super Bowl.

They did, and as we told Bengals fans (and they have discovered since paying him) he was not playing at a high level. His play noticeably dipped following the 2021 season as teams found more ways to get to him/get pressure against him.

Joe Thuney has played roughly as well as LT as Brown did that entire season.

Watching games it felt that way, guess it's real. So it would be a curveball for them to put him over Caliendo. Not that other guys aren't just as capable of beating him, but thought that was noteworthy since we've been worried about that matchup most.

Quick search reveals he aligned on the left side of the defensive formation (ie over RG) on 96 percent of snaps this year.

So it would be a little surprising to see him align on the right side, over Caliendo.

And as I noted above, the Eagles this year are middle of the pack this year in sacks, whereas in 2022 they were among the highest in NFL history with 70 sacks.

I watched last years Eagles/Chiefs game at Arrowhead and wow. Spags adjustments just killed their offense. Only 7 points until the end of the 3rd quarter.

I get that Saquon adds a way bigger element this time, but Spags just had the right formula for him.

I do not see the Eagles doing what they did last time on offense

Hurts knee is even worse than it was in that game.

In that game the only running he could do was QB draws.

No they definitely wont, because they arent the same offense.

They are totally a run first offense now. Barkley can take it to the house on any given play. We cant let up on him for a single play.

I think we are seriously undervaluing their Defense as well. They are much better than Buffalo's D.

This game will be every bit as hard as last week but for different reasons.

Should be another battle. Most of their offensive line are Hall of Famer's. Their running back looks like Barry Sanders and if we go into the game selling out to stop the run than it's not impossible for Hurts to just play pitch and catch with both of their freakishly talented receivers and their HOF TE. Where the Chiefs have an advantage is the pass rush but that's something the Elgses' will be locked in on. If Mahomes calms his nerves and take a lead that would be a massive advantage. Eagles are clunky pass team that can't come from behind. Can't play chess like the Chiefs.

Really key, and this is obvious - is getting up by 17+ or so, because then it just kills Barkley being a factor.

So a fast start is just crazy important.

Plus since I'm gonna be there I'd like to just enjoy the game without having PTSD.

Have we been up by 17+ at ANY point this season let alone in the SB?

We’re not gonna make them play from behind like that. And even if so, their running game has explosives that make it a fair-er fight. It’s great to hope we can get them into situations where they’re less likely to run the ball, but unless they’re crazy, they’ll keep going back to it as the explosiveness is off the charts relative to other historical offenses.

Last thing I want is to pretend we can sell out to stop the pass on 3rd and 7 up a TD in the 4th and then they run for 60.
