Let's Talk About the Eagles (Super Bowl 59 Discussion)

We're headed back to the Ship and will try to be the first team to 3-peat in Super Bowl history!!! Chiefs open up as 1.5 favorites over the Eagles.

Discuss.

Obviously the guy is a stud given the sheer numbers he's put up this year. But the Rams kept him bottled up except for those two plays and Jaylen also had a 44 yard TD. Maybe that's a bad sample game to look at?
Why do people keep doing this "if you take away..." bit with Barkley's rushing totals? Explosive plays are what Barkley does. You can't just wave the hands and take that away and pretend it doesn't exist.

Christian McCaffrey had 22 carries for 80 yards and scored 1 touchdown in 1 game in Super Bowl LVIII against the Chiefs on February 11.

If both teams play an A game, it's just gonna come down to a play being made or not made somewhere along the way.

But the key is that there are just no guarantees that both teams play an A game. I think if the Eagles have stepped back anywhere its in their coaching staff. I just don't worry as much about Moore or Fangio. And Sirianni is still a clown.

I think the odds of the Eagles playing a great game are lower than they were under the 2022 staff with guys like Kelce and Cox as long-term veteran throughput.
KC's defense was green and mediocre in '22, and the WR corps was Smith-Schuster, MVS, Toney and Moore.

The tackles weren't exactly spectacular either.

I don’t think anyone is saying “If not for the long runs, Barkley sucks”.

I think the point is more that if you limit the long runs, then the Eagles are forced to work for it.

Look at the Green Bay game. Barkley had a nice but not dominant game. His long run was 17 yards and the Eagles were almost completely unable to sustain long drives.

Green Bay’s 4 turnovers lost that game. The Eagles otherwise had difficultly finishing drive when Barkley isn’t hitting home runs.

Eagles punted 5 times and kicked 3 field goals. 1 TD came on a short field after a turnover. The other was Philly’s only long drive of the game.

Replicate that effort, and the Chiefs are winning the Super Bowl.

Right. these guys aren't bullies like the 03 chiefs that just rush for 10 yards and push you around. they're making their money on busting a long one here and there.

You have to go with Thuney and Caliendo, which Andy confirmed today.

Yes, Carter and Williams vs. Caliendo is scary. But if we are going to deal with quick pressure, I want Patrick to see it coming. He dealt with it his few few years before Thuney.

The blindside shit has proven to be a far bigger concern over time because there's not much 15 can do to avoid it.

Caliendo and Trey will get help.

I don't see Reid letting Jalen Carter wreck the game.

Barkley had a great year, but so did Derrick Henry and Spags limited him to 40 yards in week 1, which is by far his worst game of the season. The media is acting likely Saquon is going to run roughshod over our D.

Barkley - 2000 yards, 13 TDs

Henry - 1920 yards, 15 TDs

They have all improved and all of that experience will continue to pay dividends in this game.

On offense if they can keep Mahomes upright and limit turnovers they should be able to move the ball well as Reid is very familiar with the Fangio defense. They will just have to punch it in when they get into the red zone vs settling for FGs. Hope they really utilize Hopkins and his ability to catch almost anything down there in this game.
I like it, too. KC has a big and physical DL (this is where having guys who can set the edge and hold up against the run but aren't super bendy pays off) and pretty good depth.

And the LB corps is really good against the run. Having a SLB who is an absolute freak speed-strength guy who loves contact like Chenal is also helpful, as is Bolton's ability to come downhill and shoot gaps. Everyone does his job, too - you don't see much freelancing.

Putting that on tape was enormous for us.
Yeah, that was big. If the Eagles try to cover him with Baun or Burks or Gardner-Johnson straight up, or don't dedicate extra resources, he can still put guys in the blender.

Good call on Chenal.

I was puzzled by the pick at the time. Loved the player but didn't understand the value there.

But in a game like this you love to have him.

Didn't we have this exact conversation in 2022? The Eagles had the better roster but the Chiefs had the better coaching staff? Or am I insane?

I agree about the defense but our offense was awesome in 2022. Mahomes won the MVP that year and they were one of the highest ranked offenses in the league. Very efficient despite the WRs you mention.
