Pets are the greatest. People who love and care for pets are a close second.
My heart aches for anyone who has recently lost a 4-legged member of their family. |

Thanks for all the kind words. Looking at that picture just breaks my heart, knowing that he was dead about three minutes after I took it. The way he was looking up at me, scared and in pain and wanting me to fix it.... ****.

It happens but it hurts
I have been reluctant to even post about my girl. She left on her own terms Dec. 3 crossing the bridge. Only 8 + change, AKC Black Lab. Good girl. Two weeks prior I had taken her to the vet for her yearly check-up and shots. Everything checked out OK, near $500 for the bill. Then on that Tuesday morning in December she let out a howl and I went to check on her. She looked at me, laid down, put her head down in my hands and took two last breaths. Tore me up. But it's not my first rodeo at my age. I want another puppy but I am waiting for spring. House breaking a pup in Mid Mo at 3:00am in February sucks, been there done that.

Sorry for everyone's losses. Can't believe how many of us are losing our pets all at the same time.

I lost my outdoor cat pal in September. Hell of a good cat and great fishing buddy. Saved her out of a storm sewer from work as a kitten and took her to the vet. Vet said she was a she but later it became apparent she was a he so we called her our TransCat mockingly. She must have got into some poison or bad food. Went missing for a couple days and so I went looking for her. Found her barely alive by the lakeshore and got her to the house and cared for her the best I could. She was dead next day. She had had big personality and the whole family misses her/he TransCat |

I've been there, but I'd offer this, he was in pain and wanted to be with nobody else when he grew his wings. No time soon, but you'll see him again, and he'll be 100% and ready to scratch the sofa and hand out some skippty-paps to make you laugh.

There's another death I'm starting to think about - my own.
I'll be 60 this year. I'm an old fat guy with a lot of the standard old fat guy health issues. My dad, who was also an old fat guy, died at the age of 67. I kind of use that age as a baseline for my own life expectancy, and 2032 really isn't all that far off at this point. I'm fine now, but all life ends and that can change in a hurry. My dead cat was fine a month ago. In the past, the advice I've always given and followed about losing a pet is to give it a few weeks and then get another pet. I'd love to get another kitten. But now, I'm at the age where it is reasonable to assume that any kitten I get will become a cat who outlives me. Is it selfish, or even cruel, to want another pet? I mean, people understand death, but a cat who sees me hauled off in an ambulance never to return won't. I guess I could get an older cat, but then there's the issue of whether it would get along with the two I still have. Or maybe I should just stick with the two I've got. I just don't know. Sorry, but I'm feeling a bit morose this evening. |

In my opinion, get another kitten, give it a better life than the one it’s destined for and let things play out naturally

I'll probably get another one. Been a long time since I've had an actual kitten - our youngest was about 10 months old when we got him, so he was still playful but also pretty much fully grown. He's having a tough time today, because he was really bonded to Apollo. I think a kitten would do us both a lot of good. |
