Is it me or did the NFL quietly change the rules making it legal to hold Chris Jones on most plays

Karlaftis is getting pressure but not converting them into sacks. |

Chris is getting double teamed at a higher rate than ANY lineman in the league. And beating double teams at a higher rate than anyone.
This should tell you that the d line needs an overhaul, or at least ONE LEGIT COMPETENT EDGE GUY THIS OFFSEASON. There's no reason to ever resign a Karlaftis now. Dude doesn't close out plays. Chris needs a lot of help. It's basically just him. |

He simply hasn't advanced any this year. And really, after looking very good for the first 4-6 games last season and appearing to be developing quickly, he plateaued then. It's one of those things where he's a fine pick where we took him. He's a quality NFL player. But he's a young defensive lineman with a couple of championships, a first round pedigree and a little name recognition. He's going to get paid like Montez Sweat by SOMEONE. When in reality, he's a pretty similar player to someone like Arden Key. Key signed for 2/$12 million. I'd probably be willing to give Karlaftis more than that because of his age and versatility, but more like 3/$30. And he won't take that because someone will gladly give him twice that. But he's playing his way out of my plans for 2026. You probably pick up the 5th year option for 2026 but I'd say that's probably where I'd end things. He's just not improving.

Pass rushers are just something the league has a really good handle on who is what when it comes to drafting. |

I don't think you need a 12-15 sack guy on the edge per say....those guys are HOF'ers.
You need a guy that can be a double digit guy on occasion by himself, not based on who's around him. We don't currently have one of those. |

Sure.
he's our best DE. But that doesn't make him a $20 million AAV player and that's what he's gonna get. Bringing Karlaftis back at an extra $15 million/season makes this team worse than it presently is. At a point, you can't just keep the same team and keep paying everyone - that's what happened to Dallas and it's a trainwreck. Now you can make a stronger argument for KC doing that BECAUSE they've won. But as Jones declines in the coming years, do you see anything from Karlaftis at all that says he can be the central focus of a pass-rush? That's just not who he is. And if you're gonna pay that kind of money to him when he's extension eligible, that's who you need him to be. They envisioned FAU becoming the 2nd pass rusher, IMO. An edge guy who can take advantage of the attention Jones brings and the power/stability they get from Karlaftis. And he's just not that guy. And we NEED that guy. So if FAU doesn't pan out, I think you have to re-allocate the Karlaftis money to someone that might be.

Uche played 11 snaps yesterday so it seems his snap count is rising. That kid destroyed 2 3rd downs yesterday with an excellent speed rush. Gotta keep getting him more involved.
The Chiefs have a problem with their draft picks. It’s not necessarily a bad problem but it’s a problem. Bolton, Trey and Karlaftis are good players, but they aren’t guys you extend. On a rookie contract relative to where you draft them they’re A picks, however they aren’t doing what we need. Veach has really struck out at DE. Speaks and Felix are busts. Karlaftis is decent but not a blue chipper. They need to try to bring back Uche next year at minimum and if Omenihu looks like he did last year I would pay him.

I don't think it's surprising that this is who he's become. Honestly, it's not even that disappointing. The disappointment comes from the WDE side of the line being just a complete non-factor. Karlaftis was always your conventional SDE and someone that could complement a dynamic pass-rusher on the weak side really well. And that second part just hasn't happened.

As much as I hate them the Broncos have done a great job of that. Bonitto might be the only blue chipper they have but the rest of those guys are solid pass rushers who get consistent pressure together. Jonah Ellis looks like their Karlaftis and they got him in rd 3. They need to keep Uche and Omenihu if possible. Those guys matter a ton.

I'm actually a little bullish on FAU, he's progressing ok.
But yeah, you need a guy like Uche or Omenihu that can win by himself. |
