The old Geezers 70's and 80's Megathread
The Suzzane Somers thread got me thinking about a conversation I was having with one of my friends about how awesome it was to be alive in the 70s and 80s. You try telling younger generations about it but it’s impossible. For starters testosterone levels were WAY, WAY higher back then. There were very few girly men like we have so many of today. Much higher levels of T and no cell phones had a huge impact on your social/sex life. Everybody was fing everybody and it was awesome. Nobody was up in your business. Everyone knew what they were and what bathroom to use. Fat people were few and far between. Teenage years were amazing. Cruising every Friday night with people bringing out all their bad rides and the girls all sexied up. Kegers every friggen weekend. The music was so much better too. Still remember going to Van Halen’s first tour. It didn’t cost anything to see those bands back then. As a young adult the party for me just continued as I went into health clubs. Once again everybody was doing everybody. The parties after we closed the club, just wow. When I moved to the bay area from Florida it just continued. I remember when the Exotic Erotic ball was a company function and we took 10 limos to the city filled with teenage girls in their sexiest lingerie. Can you imagine that happening today? Sadly that way of life ended with Anita Hill and the invention of the smart phone amongst other things. I will be forever grateful to god for being able to grow up during that time. I feel so bad for the kids coming up today, there’s just no comparison.

So what do you say old geezers, give me a walk down memory lane.

I didn't have motorcycles growing up. As a matter of fact, I bought my first motorcycle when I was 38.

But I do remember going to my cousin's house in St. Mary's, KS and riding one of those when we were kids. That was fun.

I did spend a LOT of time riding my bike as a kid. That probably has a lot to do with why I love riding motorcycles nowadays.

This would never fly today, but I got a BB trap as a birthday present. I was probably 11.


Living in the city it was illegal to shoot outside, so that was the next best option.


We wore that thing out. Shooting targets that came with it and then moving to anything else that looked like a viable target.


It was a well made trap and had a tarp behind it to catch any errant shots. Never had any injury of any kind.

No mini bike for me, but I did have a go-cart. We lived close to the elementary school and I used to take it there on weekends and ride it all over the playground.

One time I was racing it down our driveway and one of the neighborhood kids was running close behind me. I slammed on the brakes and he fell over the back of it. The spark plug on the Briggs and Stratton engine was right on top and when he fell, his crotchal area was right on top of the plug. Funnier than shit. At least it was for me, anyway.

BB trap? Rich kid stuff right there. I used a box filled with newspapers. It was sitting on Mom's old buffet cabinet in the basement. I sat on the stairs about thirty feet away and shot targets for hours. Saw that cabinet years later and it was pock marked with 100s of errant shots.

In the late seventies, I needed to qualify with the M-16 as part of Air Force training. Earned a marksman's badge. Weren't no different than sitting on the stairs and putting bb's into a box.

They were pretty good when we weren't practicing reproduction in the back of the theater. There was also more of an emphasis on things being social events and not this "yeah, but I can do this at home, alone" mindset.

People were more enjoyable to be around back then. It's not just the availability of better technology, though that's a part of it, but people don't hesitate to be shitty to each other these days.

Nah, not true. The 70's and 80's were great, but I always thought it would have been great have grown up in the 50's and 60's. That was a pretty epic period of change with cars, music and TV...

Discovering new music was harder back then I had basically 2 choices either head up to the city to seventh heaven and take my chances on albums that looks cool or wait till Saturday night and listen to the show called metal shop I believe it was on ky102?

The funny thing is, even for some music this Rolling Stones guide didn't like, I was like: That's right down my alley and I would go down to the record store and special order it.



It's how I discovered music like King Crimson, Spirit, Love, and a lot of the other mid to late 60's stuff I got into.

There was a show called, I believe Cyprus Avenue, that I got a lot of good music off of. And also the Dead hour out of SF that played more than Dead music.

The university alternative radio station was pretty good.
