Appears the Chiefs and Chris Jones are at the beginning of a contract dispute



Speculation has been that the two sides are "far apart" on a deal

So Chiefs Planet.... how do we think this will play out (poll coming)

Will the Chiefs pay up and meet Chris Jones demands? If so, how much will it end up costing?

Will the Chiefs not be able to meet Chris Jones demands and end up trading him? If so, what kind of haul can we expect?

I've really loved watching Chris Jones wreck shit for the Chiefs, it always sucks when the business side of the NFL forces teams into tough decisions.

You're paying those guys like Jones on the plays you need them to make in big spots. It may not be the most financially stable, but you need force multipliers.

I get it, and I tried to make the point that by having 140% of his snap counts covered, you might lose 100% of his game breaking plays.

Again, there's no right answer here. There is the safest route, the most daring route, and a universe of possibilities in between.

Personally, I wouldn't invest in the position. It's not about the player, really. DTs just don't play enough to warrant that kind of cap investment for how I would construct a team, but at this point I am much more in favor of paying him.

You're investing a SHIT TON of your available money for a guy who will at his absolute healthiest never average 80% of the snaps on defense.

And he's never going to be at his absolute healthiest again.

He had eight games in the 70s.
Five games in the 60s.

I’m pretty sure he led all defensive tackles in overall snap count.

I would think it’s easier to replace Hill with Mahomes at QB than it is to replace Jones with no other blue chip pass rusher on the team.

And the Hill situation is a sample size of 1 and exactly why it’s not worth criticizing them. It’s not as if they’ve shown an inability to pivot when they had to. Here they just chose not to.

Veach/Mahomes/Reid are not in for that. They'll get the deal done, but it's going to cost them.

On the flip side, the Chiefs other two superstars have clearly left money on the table to give the team more wiggle room. Our superstar WR wouldn't do that, so they traded him.

How could the team continue say to the other players essentially, "If you want to stay on this perennial Superbowl team, you're going to have to give some hometown discount," if they break the bank for Jones?

I mean the fines are irrelevant, IMO. If he signs an extension, those will all get waived. I don't mind if he sits out a week or two of TC. He's proven himself to not be some fat POS who just sits around doing nothing.

Plus it gives Bolton a chance to establish himself as one of the D leaders

I can't speak for them, but I think it's clear that it's a cap controlled league and they're on a team with a player so good he eats up like $48m in cap space or something.

If a second player wants to come in at $30m, it's going to be tough for the team. So the team will either bite the bullet and figure it out, or they're going to trade him off to a team that will.

The message as always in the NFL: play well and you will get paid. Just maybe not by the team you played well for.

He is under contract so the fines CANNOT be waived.
