Do we want DeHop?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl...9536dcd3&ei=21

Story by Andrew Gould

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

Do we want a high priced prima donna?

Staylor vs Mahomo is shaping up to be one of the best offseason battles. Not the best though, that belongs to Balto vs Common Sense.

I don’t see it. Glad he was here to carry us in cincy. But we can’t have a guy on the field taking snaps who follows that up with 2 games without catching anything. that cincy game felt like a real anomaly. Other than that he’s a nice fast decoy but he’s just so damn inconsistent adjusting to the ball in the air and I don’t think mahomes trusts him very much.

Guys, it's not about his catch radius, or if he becomes a better WR, or how much Pat trusts him.

MVS isn't a guy that's going to give you 60+ yards a game, week in week out. That's not how Andy uses him. He's going to have the occasional 'big' game, 5-7 catches, over 80 yards, or whatever, but he's never going to do that every week. Not running 4-5 routes he's not.

His principal role is to vertically stretch the defense. He's just good enough at catching the ball that you have to honor those deep routes. But his primary responsibility is to drag a CB deep, and force the S to make a decision.

When Tyreek left they knew they couldn't replace Tyreek directly so they got a bunch of guys and toolboxed a solution.

MVS role was to threaten the defense with speed deep and draw coverage so Kelce and JuJu could own the middle of the field.

Pretty much. Tyreek at least ran 5-7 go-/sluggo-/skinny post/post-corner routes a game, at least that number of jet-motions, etc. that were just window-dressing to stretch the defense.

When he got traded, Andy needed a substitute. MVS took over the deep route stuff, but he wasn't any good at the jet-motion stuff, but we had Hardman for that. JuJu was kind of a poorman's Watkins with the short-intermediate routes, except slower, more possession-only.

MVS will serve the exact same role in 2023, Skyy probably takes a portion of JuJu's role, Toney takes more of a Hardman role. There'll be some overlap of routes run between Skyy and Toney.

And MVS probably out-performed his contract slightly last season. He ran a more advanced route tree than what he did in GB, and had a better catch rate in KC. If he simply repeats what he did in 2022, he'll have done his job.

I think teams will counter more this year and be more aggressive against us.

They will go back to Mahomes early days and challenge us to beat them over the top or to beat man coverage.

So sitting still is not the best plan and that's why I think Veach/Reid aren't done yet.
