Tell me about Iowa

I have been offered a great job in Pella, Iowa. I have a few days before I have to give them an answer. Tell my why I should or should not move my family to Iowa.

You know as well as I do, that it's going to be hard to concentrate on that new job if you are worried about the wifey.

Good fortune to you in your decision.

From the farm it is 7 miles for gas, 10 miles for a grocery, restaurant, small hardware store. 28 miles for walmart or big grocery store.

And when the hell is Iowa going to raise the 2 lane speed limit to 60 or 65. The time has come.

Well it's 6 miles for all of those things for me. More importantly, it's 2 miles to the nearest neighbor. That's the reason for living out in the country. I like my privacy.

If it weren't for state taxes and the weather, it wouldn't be so bad here.

Live in Des Moines area for the last 8 years, moving from KC; Pella is close-ish -- like 45 minutes away or so. I've never been to Pella, but Des Moines has more to offer than you might think. Granted it's no where near as big as KC/STL of course, so the traffic is light.

Sports wise there is AAA baseball, G League Basketball, AHL hockey and arena league football as well. So there are things sports wise going pretty much year round.

There is a good trail system in the area as well. So if you like to hike or ride bikes or anything like that you have a lot of trails that you can use.

Pella is a nice town, but I'd its also a little cliquey. Living closer to Des Moines would be wise, but I'd be a little picky about where I'd land. The east side of Des Moines is a little lacking IMO, but places like Altoona and Pleasant Hill have some great neighborhoods.

I'd find a place in the country if its me. Something close to 163 would be perfect.
The tax climate here sucks. I'm fortunate enough to be a top earner compared to the state average. Iowa has the 3rd highest effective tax rate at the top in the US but the lowest effective tax rate at the bottom.

I can only do that if I am willing to accept the position in Iowa. The company I work for is ran by Italians and if they knew I was entertaining other offers they would end my employment.

As soon as I make up my mind, I plan on taking the offer to them and seeing if they will match it, but my hopes are not high that they will. I would be making more than my boss if they did that.

You almost have to. That's a HUGE pay increase in 2022. And how long before you retire?

Go up there and stack them checks, then come back home.

Loaded.

It sounds like the decision has been made and you're not very successfully trying to talk yourself out of it?

****ing really?

That would make the decision for my ass.

You get much past the bottom end jobs, everybody is at least paying attention. Nobody is blindly loyal in 2021.

Hell I work for myself and periodically I'll run the math on pulling the chute on my operation and working for not Buehler445.

back when things were better, I was fortunate enough to live a fairly decent life inside the perimeter, here in Atlanta. I had an epic seven year run, I really did.

Not now, I'm way more nerdy than ever before. I haven't dated much and don't crave that city style of life. I'd for certain entertain moving to a town like a Pittsburgh Kansas.

Living here tho, you absolutely DO miss the snow, even though it'll spit from time-to-time here, not enough volume nor time prior to melting away. There have been a handful of exceptions since I've lived here (1992) ...& no I've never been to jail except one time in highschool (uninvolved)
and Iowa would be cool, actually.

The strip clubs in Iowa are far better than anything Kansas or Missouri has to offer.
or at least they used to be.... I haven't been up that way in a few years so I guess that could have changed. I helped pay many a college girl tuition back in the day.
