Cutting the cable, looking for some advice.

The Mrs and I have decided to take the leap and cut off cable TV and start streaming. Along with vudu, prime video, Pluto tv and a couple other free streaming apps, I want to get an outdoor HD antenna for local channels.

My main questions for anyone who has done this are, what should I look for in an HD antenna (brand, range etc.) and of Hulu, sling, which one would give me the most similar channels to cable.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So, I've signed up for Philo since they appear to have most everything we want, and ordered a 200 mile range antenna from Amazon. I'm cutting loose on Tuesday. I'm sure I'll have some growing pains figuring out what works best, but I'm actually excited. Thanks for all of your input

Yea.....that happened because that is the month before my oldest goes back to college. He signed up for the Xbox game pass and proceeded to download everything he wanted before he left because his wifi at college is very slow.

He did the same with every device he had...and then you factor in the kids being home for summer vacation...

I tried to pull my numbers from the past several months but since I just moved on Thanksgiving, it won't show me anything other than my new house usage. But I'm sure it's the same now as it was. I did keep an eye on it for that first month or two.

Oh yes, that makes perfect sense. Game downloads require a lot of data.

Also...when he's here there are 4, 4k tvs in the house. There are a few things that will spike the **** out of your net usage.

4k streaming will do it, 4k streaming will use about 7-8 gigs an hour. Online gaming and all that is small peanuts really but when you get into digital gaming where you have to download things that will absolutely wreck your usage.

Man July was killer. I know that Xbox game pass issue - my kids seem to be constantly downloading something off that. Just looked back, my last few months....

Sep: 1,303
Oct: 1,553
Nov: 1,393
Dec: 1,301

Still 10 days left for December..... I'm sure my kids can get another 80-100GB in there before then.

OP

Who is your internet provider? I have Comcast and.with internet service only you can get "FleX" for free. Flex allows you to access comcast's library plus Pandora, Netflix plus Prime from one source using XFinitiy's voice remote. It does bring in 4g streaming.

Just but the internet service that's right for you and only use 1 interface.

https://www.xfinity.com/learn/flex

Just my 2 cents

I’ve been very happy with YTTV for live sports. Easy to program. Unlike ESPN+ it will ask if you want to join a game in progress live or watch from start.

But given that the only thing I use it for are the ESPN channels $50 seems expensive. Occasionally watch hockey on NBCSn.

Thought about Sling but with extras for the DVR and NBCSn wasn’t sure the savings were worth it.

If you know someone who still keeps cable.....parents, friend, sibling etc. Offer them something to use their cable account to stream things.

My parents can use my Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ in exchange for that they gave me the login and password to their cable account so all of those apps can be used for free like regular ESPN channels, fox, nbc, abc, mtv, vh1, comedy central as long as it's part of their cable you can login to the app with their cable stuff.

If said person has Comcast you can take it further, on the newer Rokus comcast has a beta app where you can use the roku like the cable box so you could get live cable with the info.

But reality offer a trade, it's something that has been great for my family.

My son gave me his netflix info, but everyone i know has either already made the switch or will soon. Unfortunatly, spectrum is the only game in our county (excluding sat. ) which is why they can get away with their bullshit

As you move away from cable, it's been my experience that you will watch a helluva lot less TV. Books and music and (god forbid) actual conversation have taken the TV's place. I'm on year 6 of no cable.

I have an OTA antenna in each room. (The first one I paid waaay too much for - like 30$. Soon found out the 8$ antenna works every bit as well.) Your TV picture will be MILES better with an antenna. It's amazing what the picture look like when it isn't being sent through 6000 miles of cable or beamed thru a sat.
Plus for games in your area, you'll be 35 seconds ahead of anybody with cable/sat.

We have Netflix, but I barely use it. If there's a game on that I have to watch, I'll find a stream and hook it to any TV with HDMI.

Also, I'm not a gamer so I don't worry about data caps. We play actual board games and cards. We have our house pretty much set up with echo devices and Hue lighting which all runs through the router or wifi. And still I don't have any issues streaming with all the devices in play. (26 total echo, HUE, various KASA plugs and switches garage, and locks. and security cams.

40$ for internet and whatever for Netflix. I refuse to give cable any money.

If you're into things like echos and HUE and even the camera's that stuff doesn't pull a whole lot of wifi.

<1% of what I use each month on each device. Yea, I know. Especially when it's hard wired in.
