MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

That wasn't the precision passing drill. That was the WR catch drill. All the targets were stationary.

The precision passing drill came later in the broadcast. It had *GASP* moving targets. They showed Rivers and Brees and maybe one other QB.

They cut out Smith's part of the drill.

Because it was awful. Per someone else on here who watched the live stream two days ago and noted that he finished last.

Good day, sir.

Good day, sir.

Wait, so he was supposed to be throwing to the WR in that gif? I had assumed he was aiming for the flashing red thing above and behind the receiver.

You know that Hilton went over and immediately apologized to Hill for having to play with Smith.

what do u mean they cut it out? I watched it this ****ing morning. Smith had that one wild overthrow when he moved to the next target. The rest were fine... or as fine as needed to be. The other QBs also were missing... it's just Smith that has that wild overthrow.. and of course you would highlight it.

It doesn't matter. You're all still bleeding out from other coaching regimes... other players. That sucks, and I can sympathize, but it's not the same.

The Chiefs just needed to be healthy and hot once in the postseason. So far, none of that has collectively happened. And even when that collectively doesn't happen, KC gets close. I know it's not the result we all want, but face it, it feels good to have a team that is in the race every year.

If Andy and Dorsey decide.. with y'all.. that Smith is not the guy to overcome enough to get over the hump? hey fine. After this year, I can respect that decision, and we all move along together to the next guy.

I totally get that Smith isn't some special remarkable guy... but as I believed from day one.. he's good enough with a strong team. I just don't happen to feel that the team around him has been strong +/or healthy in the playoffs.
