Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

That part of the play wasn't "schemed." That's a scramble drill.

Smith is improvising because he botched reading the coverage and pressure made him run.

The RB completed his route, saw the QB running and took off trying to give him an open target.

You're just making excuses because you like Alex Smith.

IMO, he watches Hill run open..when he takes the snap and goes back and plants.. he should be firing the ball...that hesitation cost them the play.

What is clear from watching years of Alex Smith is that he doesn't anticipate guys coming open.

Other than a few rare instances (mostly on predetermined throws), he mostly throws the ball WHEN they are open.

He dropped back and saw a safety near enough to Tyreek Hill that when a pass rusher flashed in his vision, escaping from that scary guy took priority over waiting any longer for Hill to get "Alex Smith open."

He plays from a place of fear and will continue to do so as long as it wins 10-12 games and earns him big fat checks.
