Hypothetical: You, pro football, and concussions.

Imagine that you get drafted into the NFL. You complete the first year of your contract and get a concussion in your second year that causes you to miss half the season.

Your gross career earnings are about $1.3 million. Taking out the agent fees and taxes, your take-home is about $650,00 for those two years. Assume that you bought a nice condo for your mom and a sweet ride for yourself, so after that and living expenses you've got about $200,000 parked in conservative investments.

Now let's think about concussions. You've got your basic concussion stories about headaches and double vision, and you've got your more spectacular stories about Joe Phillips fleeing the law, Mike Webster living under a bridge, and that Steelers lineman blowing up in a big explosion after a police chase.

You have two more years on a contract that will pay an average of $650,000 a year.

What's the maximum risk you'll be willing to take to get that extra $650,000 a year, plus a potential future contract after that?

Assume that the risk in the poll is your odds of having a Mike Webster experience beginning at age 55.

I cant speak for most, but I will speak for me.

I loved playing ball in school. LOVED IT!!!
But, I was slow. I was an average D-end at best. But, if they were dumb enough
to run at me, they got a suprise

IF I was blessed with NFL quality strength and speed, I would risk a concussion/broken leg/ whetever else may happen for minimum wage!!
I really cant speak to what % of risk, because if there was a chance I dont end up in a wheelchair, I PLAY BALL!!

Now, this has me wondering how many of us played ball back in the day. Position played and what-not. Might be a good thread topic.

I don't really understand what you mean by "what is the maximum amount of risk you'd be willing to take?"

If you choose to step back on the field, you are assuming the risk of having Mike Webster experiences at 55 every single snap. You should really be asking whether or not someone would get back on the field and assume that risk, or would they pack it up and retire. You can't quantify risk as 1%, 5%, 10%, and so on in this situation.

You could take an actuarial stance and ask, if the risk of having a Mike Webster experience at age 55 increased 5% for each year you played in the NFL, how many more years would you play?

Everyone who posts here was a 5 star QB coming out of high school that had the homecoming queen around their arm. Injuries piled up in college but most still feel they are better than 15-20 of active NFL starters. CP on average can also bench press 400 lbs and has about 12 inches of genitalia.

Depends. I never had a concussion while playing sports but never played beyond the high school level. I guess I would have to see if I am susceptible to concussions and how bad they are if I get one.

It also depends on the position you play. Linemen, RBs, and LBs I would assume would get them the most while DBs, WRs, and QBs the least.

Depends on what position I play... If I'm a O lineman sure I'll roll the dice... A QB,RB, or WR ...nope not so much....If I play defense not sure if I risk it so much either... A kicker is the best for this exercise...

Ummm, I was just kidding about the average d-end part. I too was a stud qb! Also, I dont like too brag, but the ole family maker only shrinks down to 12 inches on really, really cold days.

Do I fit in now?
