Blowfish Super Bowl Pep Talk
I woke up this morning with a peaceful easy feeling. Then I thought, “Shit, that’s an Eagles song!” Then I thought about where I was a year ago, overlooking the Las Vegas Strip from my 22nd floor room at the MGM Grand. I saw the sun come up and light up the mountains to the North, and I got dressed in my Otis Taylor Jersey and prepared for battle.
Today I won’t be at the battlefield in New Orleans, but I will be with Mrs B and my best football pal Gary; having Gates BBQ and good bourbon (we like Elijah Craig) and hopefully we can mute Tommy Boy on the play by play and listen to Mitch instead. Mitch gets a little excited, y’know…. I’ve tried to ignore the national pundits this week. I saw a graphic where four of the guys on a Fox Sports panel all picked the Eagles. That’s OK, I remember seeing something similar last year before the Niners game. They all say “Well, the Chiefs have just been lucky this season. They’re not that good." Maybe we have had some luck. But I’m of the mind that in the NFL you make a lot of your own luck by being more disciplined, more assignment sound and more ready for the moment than your opponent. I believe that today. And there’s no reason not to believe that if we’ve been lucky thus far, that our luck won’t hold for one last game. It occurred to me that if you have kids that are second graders, they’ve never known anything except the Chiefs playing in the NFL’s final four every year they’ve been alive. And most of those years making it to the Super Bowl. How fortunate those kids are. I was ten years old when the Chiefs won last time in New Orleans. I thought they’d be back many times after. But it was fifty years. FIFTY years before the arrival of Andy and Patrick. If you have kids please pass along to them how special this time and place is. It’s once in my lifetime, and may be once in their lifetime too. Fortunes can change on a dime. Look at where the Niners are this year. Today I’m thinking about my parents, whose names are on a brick outside Arrowhead. And of one of my best football buddies Derrek, who I lost in 2016. None of them were here on Earth to see a day like today, but somehow I feel them all with me today. They are watching, I’m sure of it. I have a quiet confidence in Patrick Mahomes. He just wins. That’s what makes him who he is. And we may be seeing Travis Kelce’s final game. Not saying it will be, but its possible. So break a leg, not literally, but in Stage Luck Talk, and hopefully we’ll all have reason to be joyful tonight. And thanks Chiefs Planet, I’ve been hanging around this flophouse for 23 years now. Many of you have been on the same journey. Get your game face on, get ready for a fight, and let’s show those pundits why we are who we are. Tony G Cat and I got out our rings today just to feel some mojo. I know all of you will be ready to go tonight too. I know you won’t let me down. Because I’m all ready standing on the ground. |
