Patrick Mahomes' Grandfather Is 'Hanging on' in Hospice to See Him Play in Super Bowl

Patrick Mahomes' grandfather is looking forward to seeing his grandson play on Super Bowl Sunday.

While attending the NFL Honors in New Orleans on Thursday, Feb. 6, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback's mother, Randi Mahomes, shared with PEOPLE that her father — Patrick's grandfather — is in hospice as her son heads into his third straight championship game. Randi, 52, said her father is "hanging on" to see another of Patrick's successes as his team prepares to face off against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Randi has kept Patrick, 29, informed on his grandfather's health amid the buildup to the big game. She texts her son — she doesn't want to "bug him," she told PEOPLE — here and there with updates about his grandfather, especially that "he's watching and he's excited."

Sometimes Randi's father, Randy, has bad days, but "the one thing that he remembers" is when the Super Bowl is. "I know that it has meant a lot to him," she said. "And I think he's hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play."

She continued, "I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud. And my mom was very proud and his other grandparents [were too]."

Randi previously opened up about her father's health in a post to her Instagram Stories on Jan. 24, sharing that he had entered hospice care. In the update, she included a photo of herself and her father, and referenced Bible verse Colossians 3:20, which reads "Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord."

"My dad is in hospice and I'm lost for words ������," she wrote on the photo.

The announcement came after Randy's hospital stay in September 2024 for an unnamed reason. In a post to X, Randi asked for prayers for her father as he navigated a health crisis.
