Zack Martin to replace Trey Smith?

"Zack Martin, OG

Best team fit: Kansas City Chiefs

We have Trey Smith fitting with the Bears, leaving an open spot on the interior of the Kansas City front. Martin still brings the blend of size (6-4, 315 pounds) and mobility that coaches want at the guard position. Last season, Martin played in 10 games due to a right ankle injury, but his pass block win rate of 93.7% ranked 15th among guards. He could help keep that Chiefs interior strong (though the OT position also needs a lengthy look this offseason).”

I've been seeing this, too, and I don't think so. He's 35. I mean, maybe if he's dirt cheap, but I doubt that.

I have to think he'll at least get the $10m on a 1-year deal that Scherff got this past year. I just don't think it's worth it with bigger fish to fry. You can get good guard play fairly easily from our current roster I'd think. And if you don't believe in that, take one in the 3rd.

I think the worst case tackle scenario leaves Kingsley or Wanya to play G. Or one of our groomed late round guards.

Time to use RG to save some cap, fellas.

We just can't have a $100 million OL. It's not tenable.

If Martin wants to come in here and ring chase for $3 million and some incentives, sure -- give him a call. I don't expect he does.

We've put some draft capital into the OL and each of those guys has shown some traits that suggest they can succeed. Let them fight for the RG spot.

If our QB needs a 100 million dollar OL and then weapons and then a defense....well...there's another conversation we're gonna stumble into.

Exactly.

Patrick doesn't need 5 elite weapons and he doesn't need a 5-deep, elite OL. He needs to trust his blind-side protection and have a couple of safety valves, but other than that, he's gotta play too.

That's why I don't understand all the clamoring for more weapons going on by the masses this offseason either. Rice and Worthy are really good WRs. You add in any even average slot to that mix and you have a really good base there. Gray is a really solid TE that, if he was the full-time starter, I think could easily be a 750-800-yard player there. Pacheco is a 1k RB despite his flaws. Sure, add some complimentary pieces around those guys but it doesn't have to absorb our 1st and 2nd round picks, especially if some nice defensive players are there.

I want another WR because I want to move to an 11 personnel focused offense and away from the TE heavy system we've used with Kelce.

I think to do that, we need a 3rd WR that we can reasonably count on. I'm open to the idea of bringing Brown back, but his injury history is just so hideous.

For me its strictly a stylistic thing. I'm a child of the single-back, 11 personnel offense. And I'm fine with the idea of a TE who's as much blocker as pass catcher as a result of that (maybe it can keep our OTs from getting hung out as often as they do). That's also why I am looking for a more dynamic RB -- those sorts can do a little more out of those stretch concepts in a single back look.

When you have a Travis Kelce at his peak, you build your offense around him. We don't anymore. So now I'd prefer trend towards my preferred 'ideal type' of offense. To do that, we'd need another WR to complement Worthy and Rice.

So keep stackin' 'em. And in the event that WR salaries continue to explode, the options that come from a stable of fairly young, dynamic WRs with some experience under their belt really open up a lot of possible paths forward with regard to roster construction.

Let's say Kelce retires because that's a big deal with all of this so that frees up 17m in cap space.

OTC and Spotrac have an approximate value on Mike Gesicki of around $7m. That's probably fair as he just took a 1-year prove-it deal with Cincy for $2.5m. You sign him, at 30 for 3 years 21m, or something near that. That first-year hit is probably, what, 5m? Now you have a quality stack of TEs to offset the loss of Kelce.

Now, you don't like Hollywood's health but a similar guy that will be looking to get out of dodge is Elijah Moore. He might be a little bit of a bitch about targets but why not go after him anyhow... OTC says 8.8m, Spotrac says 4.5m... Curtis Samuel just got 8m AAV and is similar in production. So let's go with that, 3 years 24m. That first-year hit is probably 6m. Now you have a real quality slot to pair with Rice and Worthy.

I feel like for a relatively modest investment, you've just built your offense for the next 3 years without even touching the draft.

Have we learned nothing? He’s 35. We shouldn’t be signing guys on their last legs unless it’s Travis Kelce

I hate hate HATE Gesicki's game.

He's a one-trick seam stretcher, IMO. Not very agile, not a very good route runner. He's just a guy that goes in straight lines and catches the ball if coverage ignores him.

No way I'm giving him any sort of long-term deal. I'd take Ertz for a year or even Ty Conklin over Gesicki. I just don't like how Gesicki plays.
