A Level Headed Review Week 7 2023

1. MVS - Making himself known this game. 2 Receptions for 74 yards and a TD at half. This is the MVS we need on a weekly basis, someone to keep the defenses honest and pop the long ones. 3 for 84 to finish the game.

2. Defense - looking really good. Omenihu, Karlaftis and Gay with sacks in the first half. Gave up 2 quick strike TD's in the middle of the second and the 49 yard TD run was just a tackle whiff by Reid at the LOS and the only person left was Edwards who doesn't have the wheels to catch up. It'll happen when you play aggressive like the Chiefs do. I'd rather them stay aggressive and occasionally have to deal with giving up a big play than play soft. Another game of holding an opponent to less than 20 points. Chalk up another couple of sacks in the second half to Tranquil and Danna. 7 total passes defensed.

3. Mahomes - starting to look like Mahomes of old with 21/24 321 yards and 3 TD's at HALFTIME (4th career game with 300+ yards at half). The offense in general has really found its old self, Kelce still dominating, Rice emerging and MVS reminding us he can still catch a ball. I'll be curious to see Hardman's snap count - hoping the solution to what ailed our offense was just a dash of Hardman with the growth of Rice. 32/42 for 424 yards and 4 TD to finish the game.

1st Half 300+ yard games
09/08/19 vs Jax - 313 Yards
09/15/19 vs Oak - 360 Yards
11/29/20 vs TB - 363 Yards

4. Omenihu - deserves his own bullet. Has really shown his presence with the sack and the batted pass that led to a Sneed INT. Glad we took a flyer on the guy knowing he was going to serve a 6 game suspension. He will be crucial for us down the stretch ala Dunlap and Suggs.

5. Mecole Hardman - Glad he is back in a Chiefs Uni. The Punt return was spectacular and a clutch 1st down catch in the 4th Q. He may not be a #1 but he is certainly an important piece of this Offense and special teams unit.

6. Bolton - Hoping the injury isn't too serious. While next man up (Tranquil) applies it is still going to hurt if he misses any time.

Fun fact - Top 5 in scoring D and O

Points Against after Week 7:

Chiefs - 105
Buccaneers - 104
Cowboys - 100
Ravens - 97
49ers - 87* (MNF Game)

Points Scored after Week 7:
Colts - 178
Chiefs - 178
49ers - 184
Bills - 198
Dolphins - 230

Great review... We are just getting started. Bolton will be back, may take 6-8 weeks, but he will be back.

I didn't hear what the injury was other than to the wrist....is it a fracture?

Nice write up, it is appreciated DenverChief.

Kelce really gave it all today, just an amazing effort.

I liked the overall effort by the wide receivers, Skyy Moore had a couple nice catches and Hardman as you said was a nice addition to the team that showed confidence.

Also, I think I like this head official today, Tra Blake and the job he and his crew did. He is in his second year and second time officiating a Chiefs game.

This might be my all time favorite Chiefs team. They feel like such a complete TEAM.

Agreed.

Balanced and mature...but with the ability to uncork one and score at any point.

Offense looked a little better today.

Defense played a pretty good game, outside of a couple blown coverages. Really stepped up in the 2nd half.

Really hope Bolton isn't seriously injured.

483 yards and 31 points is "a little better".

Yah. I was in the middle of something when I wrote that. Sue me.

And I've never been that impressed with total yards as an indicator of anything in particular.

But I looked at yards/play (7.5), 3rd down efficiency (6/11), RZ efficiency (3/4), and concluded that the offense showed significant improvement over their season numbers in those stats.

However;

The Chiefs didn't rush the ball very well at all, but overall the offense statistically was more efficient, in spite of a poor showing on the ground.

It's also true that the Chiefs went 4 consecutive drives to start the 2nd half without scoring, in fact, they turned it over to start the half, then were forced to punt 3 times in a row.

And it wasn't for lack of trying either.

They tried to pass 11 times in their first 18 offensive snaps of the 2nd half, at least 6 times to a WR, and completed just one ball to a WR in the third quarter.

They also scored just one time in the 2nd half. And needed a huge return from Hardman to do it.

But, in spite of the obvious issues they had in the 2nd half, imo, the offense did show some improvement, specifically in the stat lines that I listed at the top of this post.

So while you might be jizzing unicorns and rainbows over the total yards stat, I'm looking a little deeper than that.

The pass protection in the first half was stellar. Get that type of protection with Mahomes as your QB, and any WR deficiency just doesn't really matter.

180 yards for Kelce. He killed the Chargers defense.
