Chiefs not likely to fare as well in draft as in 2015

http://espn.go.com/blog/kansas-city-...-draft-in-2015

Adam Teicher
ESPN Staff Writer

CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs came away from last year’s draft with what looks like it could be a good haul. The Chiefs landed cornerback Marcus Peters in the first round, center Mitch Morse in the second, wide receiver Chris Conley in the third and perhaps a couple of future contributors in later rounds.

It will be more difficult for the Chiefs to come away with a solid draft class this year. The Chiefs pick lower in each round because they made the playoffs and advanced to the divisional round. (That’s how the process works, for those of us in Kansas City who haven't had a reason to know such things for a long time.)

The Chiefs don't figure to land anyone in the draft who can have as big an impact as Marcus Peters did in 2015. Cary Edmondson/USA TODAY Sports
They’ll pick 28th in the first round, 10 choices later than the spot where they picked Peters out of the University of Washington. The Chiefs haven’t had their first pick at 28 or lower since 2004, when they traded out of the first round and picked Oregon defensive tackle Junior Siavii with their initial choice.

If that’s not scary enough, the Chiefs came up with Pittsburgh wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin with the 26th pick in 2011, the last time they picked anywhere close to 28.

The Chiefs can do better than either Siavii or Baldwin in the first round this year, but they probably won’t do better than or equal to Peters.

The draft is a percentages game. The more picks a team has, the more productive players it usually comes up with. The Chiefs entered last year's draft with 10 picks, including extra compensatory selections in the third, fifth and sixth rounds. They only made nine choices after dealing their own sixth-round pick in a trade that allowed them to move up and pick Conley.

As of now, the Chiefs have eight picks this year, including a fifth-round choice obtained from Seattle last year in the trade that sent safety Kelcie McCray to the Seahawks. The NFL’s formula for awarding comp picks is mysterious, but the Chiefs would be wise if they don’t expect any this year. Picks are based on free-agent activity from the previous year and the Chiefs signed wide receiver Jeremy Maclin in 2015. His addition might preclude the Chiefs from getting any comp picks.

The Chiefs still can do well in this year’s draft, but they probably won’t emerge with as many good prospects as they added last year.

What the hell does this have to do with Dorsey?

When I die, I want to come back as a writer for ESPN. (Used to wish as a cow in India...now I know I will have to do less working for ESPN)

Really dumb for Teicher to write this by essentially comparing King Carl and Fat Scott to Dorsey because the two former GMs made terrible moves and evaluation at later slots more times than not.

Dorsey has almost shown so far he's almost draft pick proof. He can pick 1st, 15th, 28th, 450th and he still might be able to evaluate some value for what's out there. That's certainly better than anything that fraud Fat Scott could ever do at any position that wasn't so obvious a blind monkey could pick it (Berry, Houston).

But when it came to the 26th slot Fat Scott had to call Dad in Law for advice... Jon Baldwin over all those QBs you paid your scouts to extensively do their homework on before the draft? yea throw all that out the window because daddy told you to pick a WR that's no different from Julio Jones at 6. It's unfair to comp that on Dorsey who hasn't even made a pick yet there, and probably won't evaluate as stupidly as one of the worst GMs in NFL history did.

I would say the biggest WTF pick from Dorsey is Dee ford he gets a pass on Fisher and hit it out of the ball park on peters.

that 2013 top 10 is worse than the 2009 top 10 when Fat Scott got Tyson Jackson. Fisher at least looks like an ascending player.

Yep Tyson Jackson imo goes down as one of the worst drafted Chiefsplayers of all time

Fisher had a good year and looks better then warmack and Joeckel was a terrible year to have the 1st pick

Dee Ford is looking like a bust this is gonna be his year to prove he wasn't a wasted pick

I think with Ford they just fell in love with his workouts. As an athlete his numbers are eye popping. Obviously it hasn't translated to the NFL level because it looks like his learning curve was bigger than they expected. They couldn't predict the concussions in the NFL either. But it's clear Ford was getting by in college by just being way more athletic than everyone else.

This is one of the dumbest articles I've read in quite some time. Teicher really phoned this one in. Tell us some shit we don't know, idiot.

Furthermore, if you look back at some of the best players taken in each of the last few drafts, a bulk of them have been taken near the end of the first round. It's a crap shoot.

He gave the Chiefs a C- on their draft last year, saying that they forced picks and didn't address need, and now here he is a year later saying that they caught "A good haul." Get the **** outta here with that shit, you hack.

Everyone who follows the sport should know by now that you CANNOT predict the outcome of these drafts, and that the only thing dumber than grading the draft right after it's happened, is speculating on how good a team will fare in the draft before it's even begun.

Teicher is shit.

this

a bunch of irrelevant bullshit just to say that our draft was so good last year that it probably won't happen again.

It could truly be worse. Remember when he was doing video to go with his shit reporting. You'd have to look at his ugly mug, hear his Cowher voice and listen to his irrelevant thoughts spew forth.

Teicher is a kindergarten journalist.
HEADLINE:
Chiefs pick lower, probably won't get as talented a player as the DROY.

It's very difficult to take Adam Teicher seriously.

If Adam Teicher drew comic strips, he'd be the guy who created Family Circus

I loved that article he had a while back where he traced Gus Frerotte's route from team to team by drawing dashed lines between them.
