The Early Years Tournament: Round 1, Heat 19.

Two opponents in this heat put up a fight, but they didn't bring enough firepower to stop the Chiefs' juggernaut. Do you enjoy the close divisional fight more or the pummeling at the lake?

Chiefs 7-2 / Chargers 5-4

These other teams will never learn. The Chargers took the lead with 1:46 left, but ... Mahomes. You also see a great shot of the Chargers QB (Herbert) realizing that he's never going to beat Mahomes right before Kelce scores the game-winning TD with 31 seconds remaining. One of the best Mahomes passes you'll ever see (and that's saying a lot) is the pass to Fortson at 3:10 of the highlights. He put that pass through a keyhole. And check out Chris Jones' hustle at 3:45 - very impressive. Kelce had a great 4th-quarter TD at 9:10 of the highlights, sliding out of wannabe tacklers' grips, and he also scored the game winner. He was the leading yardage guy at 115 with 3 TDs, followed by Pacheco at 107. On defense, we had lots of stars. Bolton had 14 tackles and the game-ending interception, while Gay had 11 tackles and a 1 sack. Jones and Danna had 2 sacks each as we beat up the other team's QB, while Mahomes cruised to 329 yards and 3 TD passes. This game was pretty, very pretty.

Chiefs 7-1 / Browns 2-5-1

This was during the early Mahomes carpet-bombing phase when the league now recognized what he was doing but was helpless to stop it. He connected for 375 yards and 3 TDs ( and 1 meaningless int). Kelce was his leading receiver with 99 yards and 2 very manly TDs, and Kareem Hunt had 141 total yards and 3 TDs (2 rushing, 1 receiving on a nice 50-yard screen pass). Tyreek and Spencer Ware also had over 80 yards, much of it on short passes, as the Browns had no prayer of stopping us. On defense, Chris Jones had a sack, of course, along with Jordan Lucas, and Steven Nelson recorded an interception. On a fun note, at 7:10 of the highlights you can see a punt blocked by backup running back Damien Williams, who would run to immortality the following year as a starter. On another fun note, we had four offensive tackles on our line this game: Fisher (LT), Cam Erving (LG), Wylie (RG), and Schwartz (RT). Cleveland put up a fight but was clearly outgunned.

It was unfair to field an offense with Patrick, Travis, Tyreek, and the NFL rushing champion Kareem Hunt. But it was a fun kind of unfair. I have to vote for the Cleveland game.

Also, Spencer Ware is going to fade into the sands of history, but he was a very effective running back for us for several years. I liked that guy.

This is a great heat.

The Browns game was great because:
1) It was a good ol’ fashioned beat down for the good guys
2) We got our Ohio natives a ton of shine (3 TDs for Hunt, 2 for Kelce)
3) Speaking of, that second Kelce TD was an absolute dart. The field level view of that one from the end zone was insane.
4) Blocked punt alert! Don’t see that very often.
5) Any game watching that offense with Mahomes, Kelce, Hill, Hunt and Watkins is crazy.

The Chargers game was great because:
1) It was a divisional win that you know broke the 6 Chargers’ fans hearts
2) It was semi-late in the year. We lose that game, we’re 7-3 and the Chargers are 6-4. Instead, we basically shut the door on the division that night.
3) That Mahomes rope to Fortson. Just beautiful.
4) This spawned the meme: “the AFC West spent $500m this offseason only to have the Chiefs wrap up the division by Thanksgiving” or whatever. That’s a good one.

I guess Ware wore number 32? I was wonder who that big guy who could catch was.

But after it was all said and done, I voted for the Charger game. It was a key game during a championship year, was a thilling end, and that late game scramble by Mahomes was hero ball.

Came to post this. Definitely one of my favorite Mahomes/Kelce TDs.
