Flanagan: Don’t worry: Marty still despises Raiders

Don’t worry: Marty still despises Raiders

So, how was it that former Chiefs coach Marty Schottenheimer came up with his prediction that the Raiders would waltz into Arrowhead and whip the Chiefs last week?

Schottenheimer, who does a twice-weekly radio show on Sirius, boldly and correctly forecasted the Raiders’ victory.

“Well, actually, there was no magic to it,” Schottenheimer told me by phone. “I did it all for radio. It was all for theater.

“I didn’t really handicap it or analyze it all that much. We do this ‘pick’ segment and the guys (with Sirius) know my feelings about the Raiders. I think I’ve picked against the Raiders 400 straight times in my life.

“So I just decided that this one time in my life I’d pick the Raiders, just to see the reaction.”

And, the reaction?

“I think some people fell off their chairs,” he said.

But just so we know, Marty still is a Raider-hater, right?

“I think everyone who knows me knows my disdain for that particular organization,” he said, laughing. “I think anyone who ever knew me in Kansas City would remember the attention I paid to Raiders week. I mean, that’s what we called it, ‘Raider Week.’ ”

To be honest, Schottenheimer said, he really wasn’t convinced the Raiders would beat the Chiefs.

“I just thought there might be too much going on with the Raiders,” he said. “Too much drama. Of course, there’s always drama with them. I think that’s the way Al (Davis) likes it.”

Will Schottenheimer go ahead and pick the Raiders again this week?

“Who do they play?” he asked.

Buffalo.

“I’ll take Buffalo,” he said without hesitation.

And will he take the Chiefs over the Falcons?

“Tune in Thursday,” he said. “Isn’t that what they say in radio?”

Football fever alive

Kansas City sports fans got cozy with their televisions last week.

The Chiefs-Raiders game on KCTV Channel 5 drew a season-high (including preseason) 30.2 rating to top off the week.

And Kansas and Missouri also posted solid ratings. The Jayhawks-South Florida game on Friday night on ESPN2 pulled in an impressive 7.6 rating. The Missouri-Nevada game on FSN Kansas City also did well, with a 4.2 rating.

Rumor mill

Syracuse continues to get pounded week after week, which naturally means Syracuse coach Greg Robinson, the former Chiefs defensive coordinator, is in the middle of rumors about his coaching future.

One theory is that if and when Al Davis decides to cut loose Lane Kiffin from the Raiders, Kiffin would be available to take over mid-season for Robinson.

Kiffin and Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross have ties from USC.
