The Early Years Tournament: Round 1, Heat 30.

2017 - Week 17 - W 27-24 over DEN

Chiefs 9-6 / Broncos 5-10

The Debut. The playoff-bound Chiefs let the backups play, which included putting our rookie Patrick Mahomes II up against the broncos' franchise quarterback Paxton Lynch. You get to see Mahomes' first NFL completion, a great throw to Demetrius Harris for a 51 yard gain on 3rd and 10. His first touchdown drive of roughly 86 yards took 57 seconds, and that was a sign. Mahomes and the Chiefs positioned us for the win with a comfortable 14-point lead, but then Tyler Bray came in and had a bad day. Bray fumbled a handoff that resulted in a broncos touchdown, and then stalled on the next drive and suddenly we had a tie game. So Andy brought Mahomes back in to lead the winning drive and position Harrison Butker to kick the winning field goal as time expired. The leading yardage guy was Albert Wilson, whose 147 yards made him a millionaire. Mahomes threw for 284 yards in his first appearance, and the Chiefs defense pitched in with two interceptions and five sacks, including a Chris Jones sack and strip that Ramik Wilson returned for a touchdown.

Chiefs 4-4 / Packers 7-1

Man, what happened in this game? The Chiefs scored a touchdown on the opening drive and then all offense pretty much stopped. Mahomes finished with 166 yards passing and the team had 77 running against the 7-1 Packers. Our leading yardage guy was Darrel Williams with 73 yards. We had six penalties and the other team had both time of possession and yardage advantages on us. But the Packers missed one field goal, Okafor blocked another one, Chris Lammons recovered a muffed punt fumble, Sneed got an interception, Matthieu got a sack, and in the final two minutes of the first half Butker kicked two field goals. The defense held firm, not giving up a score until late in the 4th quarter. Needing to wind the clock down, Clutch Mahomes made a great 3rd and 10 throw to Tyreek at the 2:00 mark to retain possession and prevent any Green Bay final drive. It was gorgeous. The defense was great, but the star of the game may have been Tommy Townsend, who brutalized the Packers with 6 punts for a 56.8 yard average that included the aforementioned fumble.

The Packers game was an interesting win via critical plays against a very strong team. It was a good win.

But come on. The Debut was when the curtain was raised on the greatest quarterback in the history of the NFL. If you watch the highlights, we saw what we were getting, though that one snapshot was a cruel tease where we had to wait 8 months to prove it. I have to vote for The Debut.

The debut, without question.

We knew we were going to have a fun 2018 year watching Patrick, even with potential growing pains.

I don't remember precisely what I thought after that game. I was obviously happy, but I think I wouldn't let myself get excited after only one game. I certainly wasn't expecting anything like we've experienced over the past five years, with the ticker tape and MVP trophies and all that stuff.

I now wonder how far the debut will go. I had overlooked this game when you opened up this polling thinking of 2018-onward.

The debut.

When you can throw a ball that is so perfect, even Clankmetrious Harris pulls it down with his metal hands?

Yea, that’s our guy.
