Mahomes Postseason Tourney Round 2D: Chiefs/Eagles 2023 vs. Chiefs/Colts 2019

Game A: 1 seed Super Bowl 57: Chiefs vs. Eagles: State Farm Stadium, February 12th, 2023

It could not have been scripted better for the Chiefs to end their 2022 Football Season in the exact place it started against the Philadelphia Eagles. After being fired from Philly 10 years prior, Andy was returning to the Super Bowl to face his former team, the Kelce brothers, after starting the most popular podcast in the NFL, were facing off in the Mama Kelce bowl, and Patrick Mahomes was coming to complete his legacy defining year against Vic Fangio. Fangio is credited with pioneering the two high defensive look against Patrick Mahomes, a defense which is now the response against all modern passing offenses. While Fangio was unable to field an offense more capable than a 1980’s Marty Offense to actually beat Mahomes, his defenses slowed down and frustrated Patrick to a point that our young QB and Andy Reid got bull-rushed to start the 2021 season when all opponents rolled out that defense to stop Patrick. The beginning of that season was the first time we saw Patrick struggle and lose his confidence for an extended stretch, and even more notably, the season ended with the Bengals stifling Patrick in one of the worst halves of his career to end the previous season. These struggles were on everyone’s mind when Tyreek got traded last offseason, the narrative that Patrick and the Chiefs were taking an inevitable step back while the AFC West “loaded up” became a dominant one going into the year. Patrick responded by putting together an MVP season complete with a redemption victory against the Bengals. Now in the Super Bowl, the Chiefs needed a complete team effort with the defense and special teams coming up huge in big moments. Unlike Jimmy G, Patrick was now against a young quarterback who rose to the occasion and traded blow for blow with Patrick. Patrick would need to be perfect against a Fangio planned defense to nab this legacy defining victory and launch the Chiefs into the dynasty conversation, and he was.

Game B: 9 seed AFC Divisional Round: Chiefs vs. Colts: Arrowhead Stadium, January 12th, 2019

There was an intense amount of nervous energy going into this game. It is difficult to remember now, but it seems fitting that Patrick’s first ever playoff test would be against who was, without a doubt, the rainmaker of our playoff past. A rematch that summoned memories of player KC fans are not even allowed to name, of a game that featured no punts, another that featured no KC first downs in an entire half, and one that featured the largest blown lead in playoff history (that personally put my fandom in purgatory for a year and change). The Chiefs were also staring down the very QB who recovered a stripped ball at the goal-line for a diving touchdown and orchestrated that comeback. Compounding those nerves was that our record-setting passing quarterback as a West-Texas boy who was scheduled to play in the snow for the first time (in the middle of a blizzard), against a team with a running game built to shred our defense. It had all the signs of being set-up to be a typical Kansas City disappointment. Mahomes crushed all of those fears, learned that the snow improved his game, and had an assassin like precision on his first two drives to make it 14-0 out of the gate. And despite your typical special teams blocked punt to give the Colts a TD and a turnover deep in our own territory, Mahomes coasted to a signature blowout win in his playoff debut. A win that buried the demons of our playoff past and signaled to all KC fans that we were in a new era in our franchise.

As an added note, Mahomes beating Luck in the playoffs soon would take a much deeper meaning in the NFL. This rivalry soon transformed as the first QB Mahomes was compared alongside to be the next Brady-Manning rivalry into Andrew Luck’s official retirement game from the NFL.

Patrick's first playoff win vs. his most recent SUPER BOWL victory. Winner goes on to go against the 4 seed AFC Championship Victory against the Titans.

Some of these should receive a bye into the next round. You might get a schmuck who picks the Colts game just to be that guy but no one really believes that.

Yeah, this largely is a chance to watch more Chiefs/Eagles highlights before it goes up against the Titans game this week.

Yep, it is nice to reminisce so I'm not upset about taking the trip down memory lane, but it really is hard to compare.

The weighting based on how deep the game was into the postseason really makes all the difference. There's just no Wild Card Round win that can ever come close to a Super Bowl win..

That Colts game did kick ass, though. It was comfortable win, which my inner lil Chiefy always loves, it broke a 25 year home playoff win drought, exorcised some Colts playoff demons, and contributed to Luck retiring.

Mmmmm, that Colts game. Delish.
Luck's last game, D played great, 'Reek and Trav were their amazing selves(also DWill!), both Pat and Luck made some great throws, and the crowd was beautiful.

Not better than the SB v Eagles.

I didn't watch the Colts highlights the first time around.... and after watching the Texans highlights and Buffalo in 2020, etc; they really came out loose. Got bored watching by halftime.... poor Colts.

I mean, it has to be the superbowl. Playoff wins are great, but nothing beats hoisting the trophy

Pat's 4 qtr 25 yard run on a bum ankle was epic in the SB. Legendary. I'll be voting for this game again in the final.

Remember the Colts game vividly. Had a TON of folks pelting this poor Colts fan with snowballs. He was being a pretty good sport about it until some ****wad nailed him in the head with a tightly packed ice ball. Shit went down after that
