LNBS: A warning regarding the future of our WRs (Conley and Chesson)

Advanced metrics blah blah blah. Yeah, I know. I get it. Random assholes in their parents' basement fudging football stats through a calculator and claiming to have found predictive models. I know each statistician is just some dude and none of them have ever actually worked as scouts or coaches at even the college level.

Okay, glad that's out of the way.

I think this upcoming season is going to be looked at as a transition year. Playoffs and even the division are still within the realm of possibility, but this team is basically 100% all of Dorsey's construction for 2017, and though time will tell what kind of GM Veach is and if he's any different at all from his predecessor, it's going to take a long time replace Dorsey's guys with his own if Dorsey's guys don't work out.

Nowhere is that more evident than at WR. It's Hill and a cloud of question marks, and I'm not sure I really like the odds facing us that we'll field any kind of reasonable assortment of guys out of the group we've collected.

We're making all kinds of assumptions about Chesson and Robinson (who may as well be starting at the same place-- Square One) and we're also counting on Conley improving a tremendous amount from 2016 that I don't think is entirely fair or smart to assume or predict.

These neckbeard guys are talking about some metric I have no clue what it means, but they bring up a good point. For what Conley is and represents to us given the measurables he was drafted for, why haven't we seen that kind of explosion out of him yet? What's the hold up? Why when he GOT looks in the playoff game was he always seemingly out of reach of the pass or just always blanketed slightly too much to get the rock thrown his way?

And why is Chesson going to be any different now, and if he is, why should we give a shit about his rookie year when we take into account how ****ing difficult it is to crack Andy Reid's offense code as a rookie? Yeah, Tyreek Hill, but is Chesson going to flat out BLOW AWAY with his speed every defensive back who tries to cover him conventionally?

Anyway... this is what I'm talking about. They don't have an article on this, and if they do I'm too lazy to look it up. I have no clue if Matt Kelley is even reliable among his own kind as far as neckbearded advanced metrics dorks go. But... here it is.

That YouTube video gave me AIDS - but I enjoyed your post other than that.

I'd feel better with Maclin still on the team, tbh.

We're defenitely going to have to upgrade the WR position when Mahomes starts next year. I'd hate to throw him out there with this WR group.

What are your predictions for Conley in the upcoming season?

What I'm saying is I don't think he has what it takes.

Julian Battle. I really wanted him to do well because he had such a badass name.

Conley had 44 catches last year. If he gets 50-60 and a few touchdowns that's fine for the third option in this offense.

Our run game is depending on a rookie to step up, too.

I actually think our offense is going to be league-average, but there's going to be 3-4 truly horrendous offensive games where CP truly melts down.

Losing Maclin was a far bigger blow than any player we've let walk since I don't know when.

Huh? Maclin had similar production to Conley last year.

Maclin is a far better player who had a down year. Defenses respect him.

He had a down year because he's a declining player. A glorified #2 WR who was getting paid like a top 10 wideout. Conley can put similar numbers.

I went to their website but didn't see any projections that certain college WRs would fail in the NFL.

It is a Chiefs tradition to not properly invest in the WR position and over-project that inexperienced players will make the transition to reliable/productive NFL WR's.
