In order to hook two xboxs up i dont need a router right?
Also can I use a regular ethernet cable or does it have to be the xbox brand?

Your standard ethernet cable will work.

I believe the XBox system link cable is a CROSSOVER. So a standard ethernet cable won't work.

I'm pretty sure it is crossover.

If you have a hub you can use standard cable from both xboxes to the hub.....if you hook them up directly you will need a crossover cable.

I work with network transmission like ethernet every day. In general you have two types of devices -- DTE and DCE.

DTE is "data terminal equipment" which generally means end-user device, like a PC...or your XBox.

DCE is "data circuit terminating equipment which generally means network device, like a switch or a hub.

Normally, DTE's talk to DCE's and they are wired such that you use a straight-through cable to talk to each other. Transmit on DTE talks to receive on DCE and vice versa.

Because you are connecting two XBox's together (both DTE) a straight-through cable would cause transmit on one to talk to transmit on the other - no workie.

All you need to make this work is an ethernet crossover cable. That's essentially what the MS System Link cable is. Of course, it's more expensive because it's got MS logo slapped on it.

All that crap just to say "All you need to make this work is an ethernet crossover cable"

WHy not teach everyone here about Network Design, Translations, DMS-100 Switch Technology, give some examples of each, maybe cover some SONET Technical Overviews, Voice Fundamentals concerning Telecommunications, and dont forget to use the "telco cloud" in your explanation of everything.

Then you can get into the fun stuff like Voice over IP, Cirtcuit to Packet or what is known as C2P, CENTREX, and everything associated with planning.
