They were 13 games above .500. They were still right behind Cleveland and the White Sox in the standings... but they'd just ripped off 14 wins in a row and had a legit shot at overtaking one if not both for their playoff spots.

Cone/Appier was a great 1-2 punch with Tom Gordon and Gubicza behind them. Hamelin was making an outside run at the team HR record, Joyner/Lind/Gagne/Gaetti was a very good defensive infield. Tons of speed in the OF with Vince Coleman and Brian McRae.

I remember one of you wrote that in the Star and got a good laugh.

That team had the starting pitching to do damage in the playoffs, with Pichardo and Monty to finish it off.

That post made me curious so I looked up the final AL standings when the strike hit with about 40 games to go:

East - NY Yankees 70-43
Central - Chicago 67-46
West - Texas 52-62 (That's not a typo)

WC
Cleveland - 66-47
Baltimore - 2.5 GB
Kansas City - 3 GB
Toronto - 12 GB

Royals were 3 back of the WC and 4 back of the division, and were on fire in the 2nd half of the season. Kind of gets lost in history though because everyone talks about the Expos, who had the best record in baseball when the strike hit.

I still say the Royals made a mistake not staying in the AL West.
