To me, that means the insurance company wouldn't cover a preexisting condition or that they didnt feel that rolling the dice on his neck was a smart choice.

Dude, if Manning suffers a neck injury Denver doesn't have to pay him another dime. They are already covered in the event he suffers a neck injury

They took out an insurance policy because Manning passed his physical in March, and when he did, it kicked in $40 million worth of guaranteed money. If Manning suffered a knee injury in December, and couldn't play at all next year, Denver will still have to pay him $40 million. Now if he hurts his knee Denver will still pay him $40 million but they will get $10 million back from the insurance.
