Actually, I thought Elway's motivation was that he didn't want to play for Frank Kush, who was a real asshole. He had leverage of threatening to play baseball instead of football, and he used it. I never had a problem with it. I would have done the same thing if I had been in Elway's position, and I suspect you would have too.
I think saying that Elway damaged the very foundation of the NFL is a bit of a stretch.
