I was curious to see how Felix compared to some of the other top pitchers in the game right now. Obviously he is really good in his own right but I have always thought he is a little overrated and fails to be great. IMO to be great means you are consistent. Sure he has games where he pitches really good which drives down his numbers, but he has too many stinkers to be considered a great pitcher.
So looking at starts over the course of this season, in 25 starts Hernandez has given up 4 runs or more 8 times. That is 32% of his starts that are not quality starts. As a comparison here is a list of some of the other top AL pitchers.
Weaver - 3 times in 21 starts for 14%
Verlander - 7 times in 24 starts for 29%
Price - 3 times in 23 starts for 13%
Sale - 3 times in 21 starts for 14%
Harrison - 6 times in 23 starts for 26%
Peavey - 5 times in 23 starts for 22%
Kuroda - 6 times in 24 starts for 25%
All of these pitchers are more consistent than Hernandez in giving you quality starts and keeping the team in a good position to win. There could be more but you get the idea.
I also want to be clear I am not trying to knock the guy or diminish how good he is, I am just trying to say he is not the end all be all for pitchers.
