I was in 9th grade. We were supposed to watch it in class. They rolled in the TV and we got to watch the coverage of the explosion instead.
Funny, when she said she saw parachutes...I hadn't thought of it in a long time but I now remember wondering if they might have survived, bailed out somehow...it was 1986...just seemed logical I guess...
