Generally speaking, the vast majority thought that Cassel would be serviceable THIS year, that Thomas, Toomer et al would provide leadership and that coaching alone would lead to a .500 record or thereabouts.

I think the overwhelming sentiment here was that 6 wins, even when considering the coaching, was the ceiling for this team. I'm not sure who you're talking about.
I think we know now that the assortment of WR's we had at the beginning was woefully insufficient. So had he been given the opportunity he might've made a Bobby Wade contribution to the team. His age worked against him more than anything else. We didn't have any world beaters at that position.
