Pioli was interviewed before McDaniels took the job and he knew there was a good possibility McDaniels would get hired by the Donx. Yet he still elected to take his time and didn't rush to sign with the Chiefs. The most likely scenario is that he wasn't as interested in signing McDaniels as the press speculated, but instead was more interested in going after a Bill Parcells disciple that he knew, like Haley. And it would make sense in the state that the Chiefs were in for Pioli to look for someone who had been around for a number of turnaround projects (Jets, Cowboys, Cardinals) than someone who had been around a successful team for a couple of years like McDaniels. What pedigree would McDaniels have had for knowing how to rebuild a team?
Watching McDaniels and Xanders function in Denver so far, it doesn't appear that McDaniels would have been the right fit with Pioli anyway.
Remember, the press also speculated that the top guy on his list was Kirk Ferentz, and that turned out to be false as well...
