Chiefs likely sole remaining suitor of Pioli

With Cleveland reportedly deciding on former Jets coach Eric Mangini to replace Romeo Crennel, that makes it far less likely that New England personnel man Scott Pioli will end up as the Browns' general manager.
Pioli reportedly wants to hire his own people and, if nothing else, make his own decision on the direction of the team that hires him. There are few bigger directional shifts than a coaching change, and the Cleveland job probably just lost much of its luster for a man who appears eager to make his own name and establish a team's future.
Pioli reportedly interviewed this week with Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt, who is looking to name Kansas City's first general manager in more than 20 years. Pioli seems to fit Hunt's profile, but Pioli also reportedly wants total control of a franchise. Hunt has said he will split the president and GM jobs that Peterson held for two decades.
The Browns and Chiefs had been the top suitors for Pioli, who might be just as interested in staying with the Patriots, with whom he has won three Super Bowls since joining his friend Bill Belichick in 2000.
Hunt gave no update on the GM search during or after Peterson's farewell event at Chiefs headquarters.

Update from someone inside the Chiefs organization!
Submitted by Rocky Alden on January 7, 2009 - 6:13pm.
Okay gang, as many of you know I still have friends at the highest level in the Chiefs organization and have this info to share with full confidence: Scott Pioli is the new GM. His announcement will come Thursday or Friday at the latest. Clark and Scott are working out the finer points of his contract tonight, but the deal is sealed. Also, Clark informed Herm Edwards and his coaching staff that they will be released. All assistants can reapply through Scott.
I only share this information because I'm no longer with the team and it's fun to share that a new day is dawning at Arrowhead. Scott Pioli will quickly move to clean out the front office and hire a new coach.
The only info I have on the new coach is it will not be Kirk Ferentz from the Iowa Hawkeyes. Kirk coaches his son at Iowa and does not want to leave until his son graduates.
Mike Shanahan has contacted Pioli, but I don't know any info beyond that.

This is exactly what I have inferred thus far. First off it's common sense. All you read on the web was that Pioli was "the" sought after man in the NFL. Everyone was supposedly eyeing him. Until he met with Clark. Then... nothing at all. Noone was after him or even mentioning his name any longer. His former suitors moved on and began interviewing other prospects. There's a reason this is all so very hush hush in KC. It's because big things are happening right now. Just be excited for us ok? Quit bithcing.

I might have bought what you said if it weren't for the fact that every single tid bit was the best case scenario. When something is too good to be true, it generally is not true.

I too can verify the validity of Rocky’s info. He has been VERY accurate in the past! Thanks for the info Rocky! Now I can relax and wait for the press conference. I was nervous the Chiefs would screw this one up but Clark has stepped up for us all.
