Everybody talks about Herm and the Peter Principle, but I'm not sure there's a better example of that principle than Dick Vermeil. The Rams were not (even close to) a contender until their front office took control away from him in several areas. He did nothing here in 5 years, where he was basically unsupervised by Peterson. The only time the GM actually took a stand, we got our best draft pick in a decade, and Vermeil, instead of using the guy, pouted for two years afterward.
Herm may or may not be the answer. Too soon to tell, although early indications are not good. But Vermeil, well, 5 years says he just wasn't very good.
