Trick one on Kubuntu is to use Adept to install Synaptic. Adept is a POS IMO. From there it helps to install Automatix (google it) for multimedia stuff. Right out of the box it will have Konversation installed and it will take you straight into the Kubuntu IRC which is also very good.
