It was a suborbital flight. They weren't traveling all that fast. To achieve orbit it would have had to be traveling thousands of miles per hour. The burning around the capsule that we're familiar with is because of that speed. On a suborbital shot, they don't achieve orbit, so they were probably only traveling about as fast as anything falling to the earth.
