The only downside might be that it's ~30 miles east of downtown/Sky Harbor, depending on where you're going in Phoenix, but yeah that Springfield to Mesa direct flight is simple and the Mesa airport is just as easy to get in/out than Springfield.
IMO, Sky Harbor isn't bad compared to other big cities (depending on time of day, traffic is the biggest pain in the ass), but if you want a Springfield airport experience, then Mesa is a great option.
