So I mentioned my Lisa Bonet moment. No joke, I think I blacked out for two days after that “hey” and little smirk from her. Pretty sure I took it out on my then girlfriend.
Fast forward several years…. I’m doing prep on “King of Staten Island”. Lots of costume fittings with Pete, Bill and of course, Marisa Tomei. I’m loading the truck and organizing, and I take a little break. Sitting on the back of the truck, farting around on my phone, I hear a semi-familiar voice from the sidewalk, “oh my god, I love that! You look so great! Your tshirt is perfect!”
I look up, and yup, it’s Marisa Tomei coming in for another fitting. And I was wearing a black tshirt with “EQUALITY” on the front. She asks if she can take my photo, and she gets into small talk about us both being on the show. And my brains turned into mashed potatoes. I had nothing. Pretty sure she walked away thinking I was on the spectrum or totally gay. I blew it. She was super friendly and I was an awkward weirdo.
But I did sorta make up for it a week later when we were shooting on set. My set partner Jackie was covering Marisa, and her necklace broke. Jackie panicked, but I stepped in…. “Just use a little gold thread and stitch it in the back. The camera will never see it. Jackie thanked me profusely and Marisa said: you’re a smart mother****er Thomas.
