One of my best friends has descended into something that might be schizophrenia since hitting menopause. She's cut off contact with all her friends and family and refuses to see any doctors. It sucks.

Her parents have come out, we've tried interventions, she just runs away. We've had the mental health outreach people come talk to her and she's smart enough to say all the right things and none of the crazy things. So she doesn't meet any of the criteria for being involuntarily committed.

If she had an outburst like this, it might result in her getting some help. But as it is, she's stays in her place talking to herself, with enough savings to pay the bills for some unknown amount of time.

She has a roommate that she almost never talks to, but at least it's a way we can keep eyes on her. If she ever found out we were talking to her roommate, it would feed into all her paranoid fantasies and she'd either kick him out or go on the streets. Either way we'd lose all contact.
