The keyboard on my Asus Chromebook is the same size as my Lenovo PC and my Apple Magic Keyboard. I don't find it that small, especially for a 15-inch class. And you can always get him a standalone monitor.
All I'm saying is consider it. Chromebooks are easy to use and maintain and the cost savings would be substantial. For example, my Asus is considered on the high side of "mid tier" for a Chromebook, almost "top tier". I paid $300 for it. My daughters HP, which has almost identical features but runs Windows was $650.
