He's an above-average 3-4 Rush LB. He's making less than 24 ER and LBs, which puts him towards the bottom of the heap of "#1" players at a similar position, which is exactly what he is as a player.
That's a solid value signing IMO and far and away not "awful."
Say what you will about Spillane but he was #3 in the league last year in tackles. That doesn't happen by being JAG. He's gotten better every single year he's been in the league. Definitely not awful.
Davis will play opposite Christian Gonzalez at CB. That secondary is now pretty damned good.
They also added Milton Williams to put up front with Keion White and Christian Barmore. That DL is LEGIT.
That entire defense for Vrabel just got a lot better.
They also added Morgan Moses at RT. They could stand to get better at LT, WR, and RB. That's not a tall order picking at #4.
New England got a lot better today. A lot.
