My daughter still does the Choose Your Own Adventure books on occasion.
Some of them are hilariously graphic. She had one that was like "You don't even feel the pain in your broken arm anymore as the mountain lion grabs you by the skull and drags you back to her lair..."

She had another one where she'd tried to run off and distract some group of natives from her injured friend and it ended with "as they run you down, you take solace in the fact that you saved your injured friend from them. It's better that you never knew that they would eventually cook her body alongside you..."
