I mean he essentially retired, no? I suspect he'll show up on occasion in the spin-off but I got the impression that he just saw this as the right time to hang 'em up.
It was either that or work for Rip. What the hell else is an old Cowboy who's just worked that single ranch his entire adult life going to do? He's not going to go down to Texas. He's not going to come on as an new hand in some ranch in Montana and start over.
And when the offer was there to work for Rip and he didn't want to do so, that made it pretty clear that he was just ready to retire.
I didn't think it was that ambiguous really.
