It goes back further than that. In 1969, RB Dave Hampton of GB ran a kickoff back and spiked the ball at the 3-yard line, but the refs didn't see it and Hampton was awarded an 87-yard TD kickoff return in the Packers 14-7 win over SF. Hampton was just lucky (in spite of his foolishness) on that one.
In 1971, Pittsburgh Steeler WR Dave Smith caught a pass against KC and was on his way to a 55-yard TD and started an early celebration at the 5-yard line, only to have the ball fly out of his hand and roll through the end zone. This time, the refs did see it and correctly ruled a touchback. Smith was just out of luck.
