He wasn't a better player in 2018 than he was in 2020 or 2022. He simply had more support (because, duh - he was essentially free).
He wasn't really reading defenses at all and a substantial chunk of his numbers came on freelance plays and/or simple blown coverages that came from teams not realizing that he was a different animal than anything they had on tape for KC.
It demonstrates exactly why stats don't tell the story.

I didn't mean that Mahomes was better in 2018, although he was more productive. I meant that the offense as a whole was better in 2018.
