I think its the turnovers that are causing him to be more pensive.

Early in his career he'd just chuck it because
1. He didn't know any better
2. He could
3. He didn't turn it over when he did

And he'd get away with it. Now that he's turning the ball over way more and struggling more than he's used to, I think he's spooked that chucking it will be a game losing mistake.

I know, I know. "Just keep firing" and all that. I agree. Clearly Mahomes is trying to figure it out himself. He says so in every press conference and holds himself to a higher standard. But its not gonna happen overnight. He's probably gonna continue to "suck" until he comes out the other side.
